Seeing how pale and shaken Lauren looked, Cora and Erin, who had been about to ask more questions, fell silent.
When Cora glanced up at Anastasia standing on stage, she couldn’t help the mix of awe and shame that flickered in her eyes.
God, how had she ever dared to criticize Anastasia? The girl was a born genius—miles ahead of her in every way.
She accidentally met Anastasia’s gaze, and her cheeks flushed scarlet. Mortified, she dropped her eyes at once.
The hush in the hall was finally broken by Dr. Lockwood. Rising from her seat, she swept her gaze across the room. “Are there any questions?”
The audience snapped back to attention. Some looked embarrassed, others ashamed, and quite a few stared at Anastasia with wide-eyed admiration, as if she were some kind of miracle worker. A few seemed ready to fall at her feet.
“N-no questions, I think we all understood…” someone stammered awkwardly.
Dr. Lockwood nodded, clearly pleased. “Then tell me—do any of you still believe that perfect score was a fluke?”
Heads bowed all around, faces burning with guilt and mortification.
Someone couldn’t help blurting out, “Anastasia, how are you so incredible?”
Anastasia smiled, her voice bright and warm. “Because my mother is Cecilia.”
She would never bring shame to her mother’s name.
Simple as her answer was, it sent a ripple through the whole room.
Almost everyone immediately glanced at Lauren.
This was Cecilia’s adoptive daughter—the chosen heir. Until now, that had seemed perfectly reasonable to everyone. But after witnessing Anastasia’s brilliance, doubts began to surface.
Anastasia’s talent clearly outshone Lauren’s. So, why was Lauren the heir?
