Lauren buried her face in her grandmother’s arms, looking every bit the fragile waif. Inside, though, she knew she’d passed the test, and the corners of her lips curled up ever so slightly.

Mrs. Brennan sighed. “It’s my fault. I’ve neglected you a little these past few weeks.”

“But listen, Anastasia is my granddaughter, and so are you. Now that she’s come back, of course you’re her older sister. Why on earth would we ever ask you to leave the Brennan family? Don’t be silly!”

Sensing the tide had turned in her favor, Lauren couldn’t help but press her advantage. She lowered her voice, sounding wounded. “But... Anastasia doesn’t seem to like me very much.”

“What makes you say that?”

Lauren offered a bitter smile as she looked up. “Grandma, do you believe me when I say I never bullied Anastasia? Not once?”

“David only asked her if she had an appointment, reminded her she couldn’t be on that floor without one. But as soon as she saw me, she started with the barbs—said I was tainting the place just by being there, then stormed off in a huff...”

“I promised you I’d try my best to get along with her. I would never dare to drive her away. I just never thought... she’d twist things and tell you such awful lies.”

Mrs. Brennan stared at her in shock. “Are you saying Ana started it—she insulted you, and then tried to blame you for everything?”

Lauren ducked her head, lips curving into a secretive smile, just about to confirm it when—

“Impossible!” The old lady’s voice cut in sharp and absolute, leaving no room for argument.

Lauren looked up in disbelief.

“Ana’s a good girl,” Mrs. Brennan declared without hesitation. “I know her better than anyone. She can be a bit headstrong sometimes, but she’s the sweetest, most innocent soul you’ll ever meet. When she was little, she’d cry for hours if she stepped on an ant—your cousin would have to console her for ages. Maybe she said something a little harsh, but slander you? Never.”
