The moment Nivera entered the penthouse, the faint click of her heels echoed across the marble floor, the soll hum of the city filtering through the wide glass windows.
She was still smiling faintly from her earlier triumph–the glow of her face across billboards, the look on her father’s face, and the feeling of finally standing tall on her own two feet.
But the sight that greeted her stopped her in her tracks.
Alejandro was already home.
She hadn’t expected to find anyone home–least of all Alejandro. The day had been long, and she had been more than ready to fall face–first onto the bed after her meeting with Celeste.
Her heart stuttered. He wasn’t supposed to be here—not this early. The last time they spoke that afternoon, he’d mentioned that he had meetings, paperwork, and an unresolved mess from Antonio’s case to handle. She had expected him long after sunset, tired, perhaps brooding.
He sat on the couch, a glass of amber liquor glinting in his hand. His tie was loose, the first few buttons of his shirt undone—a picture of quiet control masking something stormy underneath.
But what caught her attention first wasn’t the sharpness of his gaze or the way his fingers tapped lightly on the glass. It was the bouquet of deep red roses sitting beside him.
“Alejandro?” she said softly, closing the door behind her.
The faint furrow between his brows melted into a warm smile as he rose from the chair. “Cabezota, you’re back.” he murmured, setting his glass aside and rising to his feet.
A slight frown appeared on her face. His eyes had been opened, so how didn’t he hear her open the door?
Before she could respond to him, he picked up the bouquet and walked over to her. “For you,” he said, holding it out. The rich scent of roses filled the air as he leaned down, pressing a kiss to her lips.
It was soft and fleeting, tasting faintly of whiskey and warm–enough to make her forget, for just a moment, that something about him felt… off.
She pulled back slightly, eyes narrowing with a playful smile. “What’s this for?”
“Congratulations,” he said simply. “Your campaign ad was released today, wasn’t it?”
Her lips parted in surprise, then curved into a wide smile. “You saw it?”
“How could I not?” he said, his voice low and fond. “Your face was on every billboard on the drive here. You were… breathtaking.”
She bit her lip, warmth flooding her cheeks. “You’re biased.”
“Absolutely. Who else would I be biased to if not you?” he murmured, pressing another kiss to her forehead.

There was a pause. Then the faint sound of a man’s trembling voice filtered through the speaker

As Alejandro listened. Nivera saw the blood drain from his face. His fingers clenched around the phone, his jaw tightening until the muscle twitched visibly.
“What do you mean she was attacked?” His voice was low and dangerous. The kind of voice that made even the strongest men falter.
Nivera froze.
Alejandro’s hand rose to his forehead, dragging down over his face. Ilis expression–that unreadable calm she’d seen when he faced danger–was gone, replaced by something raw.
“Where is she now?” he demanded.
Another pause.
“That darn woman?” he echoed, his voice barely controlled. “Is she-?” He stopped himself, inhaling deeply through his nose as though trying to keep from shattering. “I’m on my way.”
He ended the call and stood motionless for a second, his chest rising and falling rapidly.
Nivera, who had been watching in growing fear, took a step forward. “Alejandro?”
He turned to her, and the look in his eyes made her heart drop.
“My mother,” he said quietly. “She was attacked.”
Her eyes widened in horror. “What? Where–how-?”
“They said she was leaving her car when someone came at her with a knife.” His voice was clipped, heavy with restrained fury. “She’s fine, but—” He didn’t finish. He didn’t need to. The image alone was enough.
Nivera’s hand flew to her mouth. “Oh my God…”
Nivera felt her stomach twist. “Do they know who?”
“No, they are still investigating,” he responded.
Alejandro’s composure was slipping—she could see it in the way his hands shook slightly as he reached for his keys on the table.
He was trying to hold it together, but the thought of someone daring to touch his mother clearly ignited something vicious inside him.
She was the only one he had left.
He was already halfway to the door when she caught up to him. “Wait–Alejandro.”
He paused but didn’t look at her.

The turned then, and she saw the battle behind his eyes—the instinct to protect her clashing with the part of him that didn’t want to face this alone.
“Please,” she said softly. “You shouldn’t go there by yourself.”
