Eugene froze for a moment before quickly saying, “Jackie, m just worried about your safety-”

Before he could finish, Jacklyn pulled herself free and cut him off, “Are you saying that the banquet you organized isn’t safe?”

Eugene felt a wave of embarrassment. “It’s safe. Of course’s safe.”

He clenched his fists. His eyes once again shifted to Liam.

Liam was young, maybe not much of a threat on his own, but behind him stood the formidable Robertson family. If things escalated, Liam’s grandfather, Augustine Robertson, who adored Liam, might not just stand by.

At this thought, Eugene quickly added, “Well, since it’s just two old friends catching up, I’ll leave you to it.”

With that, he turned away, but not without glancing back a few times.

“Mr. Robertson!” a male voice called out from nearby.

Liam turned to see his friend approaching.

“You’ve been talking to Mrs. Lloyd for so long. Don’t you think it’s time you spent a little time with me? There’s something I need your help with.”

With a polite smile, Liam excused himself. “I’ll be right back.”

“Okay,” Jacklyn replied with a nod.

After Liam left, she found herself feeling bored, so she aimlessly walked around the grounds. Before long, she had ended up by the pool.

“Jackie.”

The sound of Penelope’s voice made Jacklyn’s eyes darken.

She didn’t go out of her way to catch Penelope in the act, but somehow, the latter always found her.

Not wanting to deal with Penelope, Jacklyn pretended not to hear and kept walking.

But Penelope wouldn’t back down. She hurried to block Jacklyn’s path. “Jackie, where are you going? Can’t we catch up?”

Jacklyn lowered her gaze, casting a brief glance at her, and said nothing. She was curious to see what Penelope would do next.

Penelope felt a chill under Jacklyn’s stare but still couldn’t resist a sarcastic jab. “Jackie, doesn’t that necklace feel heavy on you?”

She had already mentioned that the necklace was something she’d personally picked out. Was Jacklyn really going to tolerate that?

Jacklyn smiled faintly. It seemed Penelope couldn’t take her eyes off the necklace.

“It’s actually a bit heavy. I’m starting to get tired of wearing it. Are you so fixated on it because you’ve never worn something this expensive? I don’t mind letting you try it on ”

She leaned in closer to Penelope.

Seeing the necklace glint under the light, Penelope gritted her teeth in frustration.

“No need. When Gene went to pick out the necklace, I was the first one to try it on.”

“Oh?” Jacklyn raised an eyebrow and hit the bullseye. “The, why is it my necklace now?”

The necklace wasn’t important to her, but Penelope kept bringing it up. Clearly, she was jealous.

Penelope was so furious that she couldn’t even speak at first. She shot Jacklyn a glare and snapped, “You think you can keep it? Believe me. If I want it, that necklace will be mine.”

In Penelope’s eyes, Jacklyn was just a barren woman. She was no match for her in any way. As long as she gave birth to the child, Eugene would buy her anything she wanted, let alone a necklace.

Jacklyn didn’t flinch. “I told you before. Feel free to take whatever I don’t want. If that’s all, I’ll be on my way.”

Penelope kept repeating the same lines, and Jacklyn was sick of hearing them.

Seeing Jacklyn turn to leave, Penelope felt like she’d punched into thin air. Furious, she stomped her foot.

The next second, her gaze turned vicious. She wasn’t going to let Jacklyn off that easily. The moment she saw the pool nearby, a wicked idea crossed her mind.

As Jacklyn turned away, Penelope shoved her hard.

Seeing what had happened, the onlookers whispered to each other.

“Why did Mr. Lloyd rush to save his sister–in–law but leave his own wife behind?”

“Just a moment ago, he was declaring his love, but now, hells completely ignoring his wife. What’s going on in his mind?”

“Mrs. Lloyd’s still in the water. I wonder if she’s okay.”

As people murmured, a tall figure dove into the pool. Liam headed straight for Jacklyn and pulled her out in seconds.

When Eugene saw that, his fists clenched, and his gaze turned freezing cold.

“Eugene, I’m so cold…”

Just as he was about to get up and go over, Penelope tightly gripped his hand.

“I’m going to check on Jackie,” he said.

As he tried to pull away, Penelope leaned in and whispered, “If I get sick, the baby will be in danger.”

When it came to the baby, Eugene couldn’t afford to take any risks.

He quickly grabbed a towel and wrapped it around Penelope. Then, he lifted her up and carried her away.

Jacklyn scoffed quietly to herself.

This was Eugene, always abandoning her in front of everyone.

George and Rebecca followed behind Eugene and Penelope, constantly muttering, “Penelope fell in the pool! Is she going to be okay?”

Her husband and parents were all her closest people, yet none of them cared about Jacklyn. They were all focused on Penelope.

Liam caught the scene out of the corner of his eye and softly asked, “Are you okay? Do you feel alright?”

Jacklyn pressed a hand to her stomach. Frowning, she spoke through the pain, “It hurts so much.”
