“Since you both seem to think Miles is so important,” Sharon said evenly, “why don’t you just knock me out and deliver me to his bed? That way, you can both apologize and fulfill his fantasy. A perfect solution, isn’t it?”
Silas let out a harsh, ugly laugh. “What, Sharon? Have you taken a liking to him? Can’t wait to spread your-‘ “Enough, Silas.” Rick’s voice was like ice, cutting him off before he could finish the vulgar thought.
At that exact moment, a teacup came flying through the air-
Smash!
It struck Silas squarely on the forehead and shattered on the floor, shards skittering across the tile.
He saw stars, staggering for a moment before his vision cleared.
Thomas’s voice came from the side.
་་
“Silas, Sharon is your sister, not some stranger you can insult. You didn’t even bother to ask for the facts before condemning her. Do you enjoy making yourselves look this pathetic? If you can’t show her basic respect, I don’t mind teaching you what it means to be a man. From the beginning.”
Silas opened his mouth to retort, but Rick stopped him with a sharp gesture.
“Sharon,” Rick began, his tone cautious, “what exactly happened?”
Even as he asked, he could guess. He’d heard the rumors about Miles’s unsavory reputation. Combined with Sharon’s statement, the picture was clear.
“Miles tried to assault me during the contract signing,” Sharon stated flatly. “So I defended myself. Or do you believe I should have just allowed it?”
Rick parted his lips, but she continued, her voice gaining a sharp, cutting edge.
“As I recall, Silas once nearly beat a business partner senseless for making a few inappropriate jokes about Victoria. Not only did you assault him, but you severed a ten–year partnership and publicly declared that anyone who worked with him was an enemy of the Kalen family.
“That company went bankrupt. The owner eventually jumped off a building because of the debt.”
She turned her gaze to Silas, a faint, cold smile on her lips. “That story made headlines for weeks, didn’t it?”
Silas wiped the blood trickling from his brow, his expression dark and contorted. He had no rebuttal, but his pride wouldn’t let him yield.
“You and Victoria aren’t the same,” he snapped, the words a reflexive defense.
Sharon’s gaze hardened, the temperature in the room seeming to drop. “We’re both human. We’re both daughters of the Kalen family. So tell me, what is the difference?”
Silas laughed mockingly.
“Sharon, you actually think you can compare yourself to Victoria? Don’t humiliate yourself. Victoria is the top socialite in our circle. All those other girls, trained in music and the arts from childhood, still can’t hold a candle to her. She’s a hundred times more accomplished than you! And you…‘
His eyes swept over her, filled with open contempt.
