Sharon stumbled backward, colliding with the solid wall of Thomas’s chest.

Even with Thomas’s quick reflexes, the waiter’s tray tipped, sending a cascade of red wine splashing across the front of Sharon’s gown.

The waiter’s face went pale. He bowed repeatedly, his voice tight with panic. “Miss Sharon, I’m so sorry! It was an accident! Please, forgive me!”

Her entrance had already drawn glances, but the commotion now pulled the attention of half the room.

“Just a waiter who spilled wine on Sharon.”

The young waitress looked on the verge of tears, her voice trembling. “Ms. Sharon, I’m so sorry… your dress… Please, let me have it cleaned. I’ll make sure it’s returned perfectly…”

She didn’t dare offer to pay for it. A gown like Sharon’s likely cost more than she made in a year.

But Sharon wasn’t the type to publicly shame someone over a dress. 1

“Miss Sharon, I know where the dressing rooms are,” the waitress offered quickly, wringing her hands. “Please, let me show you so you can change?”

While Victoria was the guest of honor, it was still undignified to stand around in a wine–stained gown.

Sharon gave a slight nod. “Alright. Thank you.”

The crowd, seeing no dramatic confrontation, began to lose interest and drift away.

As Thomas moved to follow, Julliard–who had been standing behind Carter–spoke up.
