Back then, Theo had said the same thing.

“Mom, Kelly didn’t mean it. Why do you always assume the worst bout Kelly? You should apologize to her.”

Sharon’s cold voice yanked Theo back to the present.

“Theo,” she said flatly, “why do you always assume the worst about Matty? As far as I know, he’s never once done anything to hurt you. So why are you always targeting him?”

Theo’s composure shattered. “I didn’t! I didn’t! I didn’t!”

His voice trembled with fury. “He’s the one! He’s always pretending to be nice to my face but doing something else behind my back! He did it on purpose!”

Right then, Wendy returned with the first aid kit. She stepped through the doorway with a strange expression. “Sharon, someone’s here.”

Sharon looked up, her gaze landing on Carter and Kelly standing in the doorway.

Xavier raised an eyebrow. “Mr. Biggs. Kelly. What a coincidence… didn’t expect to see you here.”

Kelly smiled, polite but distant. “We actually came looking for Theo. When we went to pick him up from preschool, he was already gone. So we checked his location tracker and saw he was here. We came straight over.”

Her eyes shifted toward Sharon, and her tone dipped just enough to carry meaning. “Sharon, next time you want to take Theo somewhere… could you let us know in advance? We were worried something had happened to him.”

Was Kelly already starting to speak like she was the lady of the house?

Sharon felt a chill of irony creep up her spine but didn’t bother responding to the obvious provocation.

She turned her gaze to Theo. “You didn’t tell your dad you were coming here?”

Theo dropped his head. “No.”

Sharon opened her mouth to speak, but Kelly cut in, her voice dripping with suggestion. “Sharon, surely you’re not going to say Theo just happened to follow you here again, are you?”

There wasn’t a single person in the room who couldn’t hear the insinuation in that line.

Carter’s gaze darkened, cold as ice. “Sharon, I’ve never stopped you from seeing Theo. There’s no need to be so sneaky about it.”

Sharon’s face remained expressionless, not a hint of reaction. No defense. No explanation.

She’d been through this song and dance too many times. She didn’t feel like justifying herself anymore. And even if she did, Carter wouldn’t believe her anyway.

Before anyone could speak again, Theo rushed out, “It wasn’t Mom! I followed her myself… I wanted to give her a birthday present.”

Carter’s brow twitched slightly.

Kelly’s eyes, however, fell on the shattered pieces scattered across the floor.

“Sharon,” she said softly, “Theo did lend me this cup for a while, but it was only on loan. A few days ago, he told me he wanted it back, to give it to you for your birthday.”

She sighed delicately. “I know you don’t like other people touching your things, but this cup… it’s some much time and effort making…”
