Chapter 341
“My father was furious with the fisherwoman’s constant interference. Whatever lingering gratitude he had for her… little by little, it all faded.”
Sharon continued, “But right when things were at their worst between him and my mother, because of the fisherwoman, the fisherwoman showed up at our house. My mother threw her out. She tried calling my father, but my mother refused to let the call go through. None of us expected… she’d die in an accident. Just like that.
“The fisherwoman’s sudden death… maybe it triggered something in my father. Maybe it resurrected only the good memories of her. In the end, he blamed my mother for her death.
“He insisted on adopting the fisherwoman’s daughter and demanded that my mother take her in, raise her like her own, as if she were truly part of our family.
“Of course, my mother refused. She was ready to leave it all behind… but before she could, my father found out. He locked her up. Kept her prisoner.”
Sharon’s gaze drifted downward, her fingers tracing invisible patterns on the table.
“Eventually… my mother pretended to surrender. When the chance finally came, she escaped and fled to Zachemaine, as far from my father as she could get.
“When she arrived… she realized she was pregnant again.
“She couldn’t take the three children she’d left behind. So… she decided to raise me.
“Later, my mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness. She knew her time was running out. That’s when she told me… everything.”
Sharon could still remember her mother telling her, teary-eyed, “Sharon… I’m sorry. The grudges between your dad and me… should never have fallen onto you. If I hadn’t been so stubborn… you should’ve been born a wealthy heiress. You should’ve grown up with a silver spoon, not as a child mocked for not having a father.”
Sharon’s voice drifted through the quiet private room, soft and calm, stripped of emotion. It was as if she were merely recounting someone else’s story.
“My first year of high school… they brought me back to the Kalen family. I stayed for a while. But I never got along with anyone there. Least of all… the daughter of the fisherwoman. My half-sister. We were like fire and water.
“After college, I cut ties completely. I haven’t been back since.”
Xavier exhaled quietly, then said, “So… that’s why there’s no record of your college under your current name.”
Sharon nodded. “Yeah. The Kalen family created a fake identity for me. Said I was an adopted daughter. Scrubbed every trace of my real background clean. That’s why no one could find anything. To the Kalen family… my existence was a secret. Everything about me and my mother… was never meant to be known.”
She let out a soft sigh. “So… I’in both Sharon McKinzie and Jenna Kalen.”
Xavier turned his gaze toward her, brow tightening. “Your name in the Kalen family… is Jenna?”
“That’s right.” Her lips curved, bitter and quiet.
Wendy, quiet until now, finally spoke under her breath. “Sharon’s mom just wanted Sharon to try… to live peacefully with her family. Sharon even hoped–just a little-that she could really belong there. But in the end…”
Her voice sharpened with resentment. “In the end, everyone-including her father-chose the illegitimate daughter. Her father was one thing. But even her three brothers… brothers who share the same mother as Sharon… sided with that girl.

“If it hadn’t been for that girl and her mother… Sharon’s mom never would’ve had to abandon everything.”
There was one thing Wendy didn’t say out loud, though it burned in the back of her throat.
‘Fine. You want to raise the child? Raise her. But to demand that Sharon’s mom raise her, as if she were her own? What the hell was that man thinking? That girl and her mother were the very reason Sharon’s mom’s marriage collapsed.’ (1
And now, Xavier understood everything.
