Chapter 544
Sharon asked, “So, Dillon, the ransom was just an excuse?”
Dillon replied, “It’s both an excuse and a real demand. If I can get revenge and walk away with a fortune, wouldn’t that be the best of both worlds?”
He looked at her with a crooked smile. “I’ve kidnapped Carter’s son and his first love. Knowing what kind of man he is, do you think he’ll just let me go? So why not take the gamble? No matter what happens, I won’t come out empty-handed.”
This man had a frighteningly clear head. The truly dangerous ones aren’t the brutes. It’s the ones who can think.
Sharon was silent for a few moments, then asked, “What do you plan to do?”
The kidnapper drawled, “Simple. Let Carter choose-his son, or his first love. I’m not a man of many virtues, but I do keep my word. Whoever he chooses, I’ll let go. Do you know why?”
Not wanting to provoke him, Sharon played along. “Why?”
Dillon gave a half-smile. “Because both of them are precious to him. If he chooses one and abandons the other, he’s bound to regret it. Who knows, he might even come to resent the one he chose. People are strange that way… we always want what we
can’t have.”
Sharon nodded. “There’s some truth to that. But this plan of yours to force Carter’s hand into making a choice may not play out as planned.”
Dillon raised a brow. “Oh? And why not?”
“Theo is Carter’s biological son and the future heir of the Biggs family. He’s only five. No matter how much Carter favors Kelly, she can’t compare to his own flesh and blood.” 2
Dillon fell quiet, his eyes narrowing in thought. After a few seconds, he gave a faint nod. “You make a good point.”
Sharon continued, “If you want Carter to make a choice, I can help you. Let Theo go. I’ll take his place as your hostage. I’m his biological mother. If Carter ends up choosing Kelly and gives up on me, Theo will resent him for it.
“When he grows up, he may even become his father’s rival. Wouldn’t watching father and son turn against each other be far more interesting than what you’re planning?”
Dillon looked at her differently now, as if seeing her for the first time.
“They say when a woman is truly ruthless, men don’t even come close. You… you’re really something.’
Then he glanced her up and down.
“But what if he chooses you? Won’t the three of you live happily ever after?”
Sharon smiled faintly. “If that happens, I’ll thank you for getting rid of my love rival. As you can see, he let me bring the money, which goes to show our relationship isn’t great.
“He divorced me for Kelly. So if he does choose me… consider the ransom your payment for her life.
I’ll even help stall him and make sure he doesn’t come after you.”
She paused for a beat before continuing, “You’re ready to risk it all because you assume Carter won’t let you live. But if I cooperate with you, not only can you walk away with the money, you might just escape alive.”
Dillon didn’t respond right away. His resolve was starting to crack.
After all, who could stay unmoved by that kind of money?
A few seconds passed. Then he looked at her. “You’re certain you can help me get away?”
Sharon nodded. “As long as you let Theo go, I give you my word. But if you kill the heir of the Biggs family, Carter will hunt you to the ends of the earth.”
