“Trying to deny that now, are you? Sharon, I’m telling you, fat chance!”

Sharon cast a sidelong glance at Nate. “So? What are you going to do about it?”

Nate opened his mouth. “I…”

But the words caught in his throat.

That’s right. Even if Sharon refused to admit it, what could he really do?

If someone was willing to offer compensation, that was called conscience. But if they’re not, it meant nothing. It was entirely up to them.

Sharon spoke again, “Besides, I don’t believe Kelly saved me. She didn’t take a bullet for me, nor did she come to pay the ransom. So, how exactly did she save my life?”

She smiled at Nate. “If anything, I’m the one who did Kelly a favor. I risked my life to pay the ransom. Without my cooperation, she might have been killed long ago.”

“Since you’re someone who claims to value gratitude, Nate, I’d hope you won’t forget to repay me properly for saving Kelly. Let’s not be ungrateful, shall we?”

Nate was left speechless, stunned by her shameless logic. “You… you didn’t go to save Kelly! You went to save Theo!”

Sharon replied evenly, “Theo is my son. Of course, I went to save him. But Kelly? What is she to me? Why should I risk my life to save her for nothing?”

Her expression was cold, and her words merciless.

“Of course,” she added, “if Kelly is willing to be my daughter, then I’ll consider that debt repaid.”

Nate’s face turned red. He was so furious he nearly passed out from the rage.

Just then, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed from nearby.

“Sharon! Are you and Theo all right?”

Wendy and Xavier rushed over, with Thomas following close behind.

Wendy ran straight to Sharon and, seeing she wasn’t injured, let out a heavy sigh of relief.

She looked down at Theo. “Theo, what about you? Are you hurt?”

Theo shook his head. “I’m fine.”

Wendy turned back to Sharon, worry etched on her face. “Sharon, you were far too reckless—going to face those kidnappers alone! You scared me half to death! Those criminals were dangerous, heartless people. Thank goodness you both came out of it safely.”

After a pause, she gently added to Theo, “This time, your mom saved your life. She took a huge risk for you. You must promise not to make her angry again.”

Theo looked like he wanted to say something, but held back. In the end, he simply nodded.

His mom saved him. So did Kelly.

Wendy checked the time and asked, “Sharon, are you going to stay here, or… come back with us?”

A trace of fatigue appeared on Sharon’s face. Dealing with those ruthless kidnappers had pushed her nerves to the edge. And

“I’ll come with you,” she said.

But before she could take a step, Nate cut in sharply, “Kelly’s still in surgery! You have to stay here and wait for Kelly. You’re not going anywhere!”

Sharon shot back without missing a beat, “What’s the rush? Can’t wait to make Kelly my daughter already?”

Nate lost all reason in his fury. “Sharon, if you dare insult Kelly again, I swear I’ll tear that mouth of yours apart!”

Xavier stepped forward, placing himself in front of Sharon. “I’d like to see you try.”
