Chapter 572
Richard didn’t look the least bit concerned.
“This is Amstern City. Did you think I’d kidnap my grandson and disappear? Besides, if Carter can’t even keep an eye on his kid, how is that my fault?”
Victoria was about to argue further when she noticed Carter and Sharon had entered. She lowered her voice, “Dad, we have
company.”
Richard turned. The moment his gaze landed on Sharon, a smile appeared on his face. “Sharon, you’re here?”
But then he saw Carter. The smile vanished, replaced by a deep scowl.
“Well, if it isn’t Carter. Must be awfully busy to the point you can’t even keep track of your own son.”
On the way over, Carter had already received a call from his mother. Apparently, she’d taken Theo out for some shooting
practice and ended up chatting with an acquaintance. By the time the conversation ended, Theo was gone.
At first, she thought the boy had wandered off to the shooting range by himself. But when she went looking and still couldn’t find him after a long search, she finally called Carter in a panic.
Now, faced with Richard’s blunt accusation, Carter didn’t flare up or offer excuses.
“You’re right, Richard. I’ll be more careful next time,” he said evenly.
Richard, seeing him so willing to admit fault, allowed his expression to soften.
He turned to Sharon and beckoned her over. “Sharon, come sit with your father.”
Sharon remained rooted in place.
“Richard,” she said, “may I ask why you brought Theo here?”
Richard?
Richard’s face darkened instantly. Even Rick and Victoria turned their heads in surprise.
Rick was the first to speak, his tone cold. “Sharon, is that any way to speak to your father?”
Sharon glanced at him, her expression unreadable. “Weren’t you the ones who said I was no longer part of the Kalen family? Have you already forgotten your own words?”
Rick’s handsome face seemed to freeze over.
“That was just something said in anger. How could you take it seriously? Sharon, a father is still a father, no matter what. It’s not a child’s place to resent their parents. If you’re willing to apologize for what happened back then, you’re still the Kalen family’s heiress.”
Sharon caught the meaning immediately. He’d deliberately used the title of the Kalen family’s heiress
Was this identity now a bargaining chip? Did he really think she still cared about that?
Her expression turned icy. “Apologies are for people who’ve done something wrong. I haven’t Why should I apologize?”
Her tone stunned Rick. This wasn’t the sister he remembered.
Back when she’d returned to the Kalen household, she might not have been particularly obedient, but aside from the issue with Cole, she hadn’t caused any trouble. Overall, he’d been relatively satisfied with her behavior during her time there
As for Cole-well, that he could understand.
She’d grown up in an ordinary home, lacked perspective, and had just re-entered the Kalen family, insecure and uncertain. At the time, Cole had treated her well. It made sense she’d try to hold on to that kindness, use it as a lifeline to stabilize her place in
the family.
She hadn’t grown up in the Kalen household. They couldn’t expect her to hold herself to the same standard as Victoria.
If she had just said a few soft words back then, or even reached out afterward, they would’ve let the whole thing go.
But who would’ve thought-Sharon had held out this long, still unwilling to yield.
He’d assumed she was just putting on a front, trying to show them she was struggling. No matter how tense things had gotten, they were still family. Blood was blood.
If she wanted to come back, the Kalen family had room for one more. They’d take her back. Just like that.
