Chapter 656
“Kelly, why are you staring at me like that?”
Thomas’s words instantly drew everyone’s attention.
He went on casually, “Do you want to go too, Kelly? Is that why you’re hoping I’ll speak up on your behalf?”
Kelly’s smile nearly cracked.
How could he just blurt out the truth like that? What on earth was going through his mind? He had to be insane!
Her chest tightened with frustration, yet she dared not lash out in front of everyone. She quickly realized she couldn’t count on Thomas or Carter to help her.
Turning instead to the most pliable person present, she fixed her gaze on Theo. “Theo, would you like me to come along with you too? I know a bit about shooting. Shall we have a little match?”
Theo had recently been practicing marksmanship. At her words, his eyes lit up.
“Okay!”
Sharon shot Kelly a faint glance but said nothing. With so many people going, one more hardly made a difference. On the contrary, it gave her the perfect chance to observe how Carter’s attitude toward Kelly would change now that he knew the truth.
And so, the group headed off in grand fashion to the largest sports club in Amstern City.
Sharon, Theo, and Thomas shared one car.
Julliard rode with Carter.
Victoria and Johanna took another.
Kelly lingered for a moment, studying the vehicles, then deliberately walked toward Sharon’s car.
“Theo, may I ride with you?”
The boy looked to Sharon for approval. Seeing she had no objection, he nodded.
A fleeting disappointment crossed Kelly’s eyes. How wonderful it would have been if Sharon had openly opposed her. Carter might have defended her then.
Sharon settled into the passenger seat while Thomas drove. Kelly and Theo sat in the back.
Along the way, Kelly asked about Theo’s recent life, giving Sharon the chance to learn what her son had been doing.
“Aunt Victoria has taken me to so many fun places,” Theo said brightly. “She even teaches me shooting and archery. She’s amazing. She seems to know everything. And when I struggle with schoolwork, she helps me too.
“Grandpa has also been looking after me. He found someone to prepare medicinal meals to strengthen my body…”
Then he paused, glancing at Sharon.
“But nothing tastes as good as what you make, Mom. I still like your cooking best.”
His voice softened, carrying an edge of guilt. “Mom, I’m sorry. I was too thoughtless before. From now on, I’ll never let you down again.”
Sharon met his eyes through the rearview mirror. He seemed so different from before. No longer did he take her love for granted. He had learned how to soften his tone, to show humility.

She had to admit, the Kalen family knew how to raise children. At the very least, this was far better than leaving him under Madeline’s care. 1
Kelly noticed, too, that Theo’s attitude toward Sharon had shifted. And toward her, he felt less intimate.
“Theo,” she asked, “has your grandpa only been taking you out to play all this time? No studying at all?” “Grandpa said there’s no need to overwork myself now,” Theo replied. “He wants me to experience the things other kids get to enjoy. That way, when I grow up, I won’t be easily swayed by small favors, and I won’t be so quick to fall for someone’s tricks.”
Innocent words from a child. Yet they struck Kelly like a hidden blade.
Was he… referring to her?
Carefully, she probed, “Theo, do you like your Aunt Victoria very much?”
Theo nodded firmly, admiration once again sparkling in his eyes.
