Chapter 661
Carter’s gaze flickered as the memory returned to him.
“I already told you. That wasn’t my doing…”
Sharon gave a cold, mocking smile. “If it wasn’t you, then why didn’t you say so at the time? Why insist I hand over the studio before offering an explanation?”
For once, Carter found himself at a loss for words.
The compensation he’d given her had hardly been meager. Yet they both knew that if John hadn’t been dragged into the mess, Sharon would never have relinquished her studio.
So now, hearing Carter’s exchange with Thomas, it was no surprise she assumed he was scheming in the shadows again.
Thomas arched a brow at her words, then lowered his gaze.
“I truly don’t know how I’ve offended Carter. He says my position at your side is born of ulterior motives. He says I sell my looks and swindle women’s money.
“Sharon, I know I’ve caused you plenty of trouble. Since Carter despises me so much, perhaps I shouldn’t stay by your side and make you an even greater target of scorn.”
He lifted his head, glancing briefly at Carter, then looked away, as though biting back words. “Your concert is coming soon. Better not let needless trouble disrupt it.”
Carter’s eyes narrowed, sharp as a hawk’s. His gaze fell on Thomas like a blade.
“Your attempts at sowing discord are clumsy at best.”
He could hear the veiled suggestion in Thomas’s tone-that he might sabotage Sharon’s concert. If he understood, then so
would Sharon.
“I don’t find a word of Thomas’s wrong. You’ve targeted people around me once; you’ll do it again. But this time, I won’t be
threatened.
“If you dare lay a hand on him, I won’t hesitate to make sure Kelly’s concert never happens either. Let me be honest with you. I have plenty of dirt on Kelly. And with my reputation and influence, once it’s out, she’ll become a rat scurrying in the street, hated by all.”
For a man who prided himself on keeping his temper under lock and key, Carter could no longer mask his ire.
“Sharon, can’t you hear it? He’s spewing lies to drive a wedge between us!”
Her tone remained glacial.
“I hear no lies. All I know is, he’s telling the truth.”
Carter longed to tell her what Thomas had just said-how brazen, arrogant, and openly defiant he’d been. Every word had dripped with provocation.
Yet the moment Sharon appeared, Thomas had switched to pitiful self-sacrifice.
But what was the point? Even if he said it, she wouldn’t believe him. John’s incident had already condemned him in her eyes.
Sharon ignored Carter completely, turning instead to Thomas. Her voice softened, her expression gentler than it had been in the entire exchange.
“Thomas, if there’s nothing else, shall we go?”
