“Finding doctors always goes through personal referrals,” Wendy explained quickly. “Carter is a busy guy, so most of the arrangements were left to Nate. He’s simple-minded. If Kelly dropped a hint that some specialist was extraordinary, he’d believe her without question.

“In reality, those people were handpicked by her. And even when they weren’t prearranged, she managed to bribe doctors during examinations. That’s how she’s kept her secret hidden for so long.”

Wendy spoke in a rush until her mouth went dry. After a sip of water, she continued, “And that kidnapping incident with Theo? That was orchestrated entirely by Kelly. We have the black-market conversations and transaction records to prove it.

“And her staged falls, her plunges into pools, the provocations she whispered to you in secret-all of it, documented from beginning to end, nothing left out.”

Her voice grew more excited.
