Her voice softened, coaxing, “Nate, I understand. You don’t want to lose your brotherhood with Carter, and your family still needs the Biggs family’s support. But after what happened with Sharon, Carter is drowning in guilt.

“You’ve been making things difficult for her all this time. Do you really think he won’t hold that against you? If you’re counting on him to back you up, I’m afraid that hope is gone.”

Nate tugged at his hair, recalling the icy tone in Carter’s voice when he had called him yesterday.

Nate frowned.

“But how can I be sure the child will be his and not mine? What if it’s his? Wouldn’t I have gone through all this for nothing?”

Kelly’s body coiled against him like a serpent. She draped her arms around his neck, her laughter sultry.

“Then we make sure first, don’t we?”

Once, Nate had hesitated because of Carter, guilt gnawing at his conscience. But now, imagining a future where he held the same power and dominance Carter enjoyed-where he no longer bowed to anyone-his blood surged with excitement.
