Chapter 899

The moment Sharon saw him, the hairs on her arms rose. A sudden, inexplicable sense of danger prickled through her.

Sensing her unease, Carter stepped forward without a flicker of expression and positioned himself between her and the man, cutting off the stranger’s gaze.

“Mr. Walton. Fancy seeing you here.”

Jamie’s eyes rested on Carter; his smile was an ice-cold thing that crawled under the skin.

“Carter, have you come here to act as a lobbyist for your ex-wife?”

Carter’s face remained composed; he did not deny it.

“Sharon is Theo’s mother. If I don’t protect her, who will?”

His stance left no room for misinterpretation: Sharon was under his protection.

Jamie gave a short laugh and said nothing more. He descended the stairs, then turned to Rick.

“Rick, would you like to introduce us?”

Rick rose and answered, “Jamie Walton, this is my youngest sister, Sharon McKinzie. This is… Theo’s father, Carter Biggs.”

Jamie inclined his head and, surprisingly, offered his hand with polite courtesy. “Carter, a pleasure.”

Carter accepted the handshake as naturally as breathing. “Jamie, I’ve heard much of you.”

Then Jamie’s gaze slid to Sharon. He extended his hand again. “Sharon, Victoria has spoken of you often. Seeing you today-indeed, you stand out.”

Carter’s brow tightened; he opened his mouth to interrupt, but Jamie’s expression pivoted in an instant-sharp and merciless.

Carter felt the change and moved to pull Sharon back.

A black, lacquered pistol had appeared as if from nowhere, pressed to Sharon’s forehead. a

“Don’t move.” Jamie’s lips lifted in a pale, dangerous arc. “Anyone acts, and I’ll shoot.”

Fear flashed across Carter’s face. Richard and Rick staggered for a beat, then snapped back to the present.

“Jamie, what are you doing?!” Richard barked.

Jamie answered plainly, “Have you not all wanted to know whether Victoria’s scandal was

Sharon’s doing? I’ll help you extract the truth.”

Rick interjected, voice sharp. “We’ve already stated clearly: it wasn’t her. Jamie, let her go.”

Jamie smiled with a look that did not reach his eyes. “She says it wasn’t her, so that settles it? Not a single sliver of doubt in your hearts?” (2)

Rick’s gaze flickered; he found himself unable to reply. In truth, his suspicion of Sharon still lingered.

Jamie went on coldly, “If it is her-if a family member can so utterly disregard kin, then she’s a poison that will only spread. Better I solve your problem with one bullet than let your family suffer.”

Before he could finish, Richard’s anger cut him off. “Jamie, shut your mouth! Release her at once, or I will not let you go unpunished!”
