“Let my sister-in-law go. And that little boyfriend of hers, too.” Conner said coolly. “Tell me what you want—just keep it reasonable.”
Miles didn’t hesitate. “The goods.”
Mr. Nettleton shook his head. “That’s too much. Pick something else.”
Miles’ eyes narrowed. “Fine. Maja’s life.”
Conner let out a low whistle. “Now you’re just being ridiculous.”
He dropped the sarcasm, his gaze dead serious. “Let me give you a little advice. Dark Web and my crew have always had a line between us. Lately, you guys keep crossing it. We both know what you’re after.
Here’s the thing—everyone should stick to their own patch. Don’t get greedy and try to run the whole show. If you bite off more than you can chew, you’ll choke.
If this turns into a war, nobody wins. Maja and Dean are just an excuse. Hand them over, we drop the grudge, things go back to how they were—clean slate.”
Miles laughed, sharp and bitter. “So you want us to just walk away and pretend none of this happened? That’s rich. Kon’s dead. Greg’s dead. You took out a whole Dark Web branch. And all those men we lost—just let it slide? After everything?”
Conner’s eyes went cold, jaw set. He looked every bit the threat he was reputed to be. “How many bodies do you need before you realize the game’s gone too far for Dark Web?”
Miles glared back, full of venom.
Conner kept going, voice flat. “Or go ahead. Keep pushing. But your whole branch is next.”
Miles sneered. “I’ll make sure to take a couple of you down with me.”
In the back seat, Miles spun Maja’s ring between his fingers, thinking of Conner’s attitude and all the chaos. Suddenly, he broke into a grin, laughter bubbling up from deep in his chest.
“Maja’s no real threat to Conner. Dean’s not a threat to Maja. The only one who could shake things up for all of them… is Annie.”
“Miles, you mean—?”
Miles let out a full-throated laugh. “Kon’s plan could’ve worked—if only he hadn’t dragged his feet.”
Back at the Dark Web hideout, he glanced at the two bodies sprawled on the floor.
A bucket of ice-cold water crashed down. Maja gasped awake, pain ripping through her hand, white-hot and blinding.
