Chapter 79
From Theodore’s reply, Josephine understood what had happened.
The unopened bottle of water Joshua gave her had been tampered with in advance.
It was premeditated.
This was certainly not Joshua’s first time doing something so despicable.
A few drops of the drug were enough to make someone lose consciousness.
Afterwards, her memory was wiped clean, leaving nothing but a blank.
Josephine’s fingers twisted tightly in the blanket.
If murder were not a crime, she would go kill Joshua right now.
She would stab him without blinking an eye.
But in reality, Joshua was Mrs. Vaughn’s–Cecilia Kendrick’s–nephew, and Josephine was surrounded by enemies on all sides. Even bringing Joshua to justice would be difficult.
Patricia, still shaken, hugged Josephine tightly:
“Thank goodness Dr. Maynard saved you. Thank goodness you’re all right.”
“Josie, I don’t understand–why does misfortune always circle around one person? Give me some of your bad luck. I can’t help you, but I want to bear it for you.”
Josephine hadn’t intended to cry.
But Patricia’s words brought a mist to her eyes.
She opened her arms and hugged Patricia back.
To have such a friend–how lucky she was!
Outside, the sound of a gurney’s wheels rushed by.
Someone shouted in panic, “Doctor, doctor, help!”

“I already called ahead–Joshua was transferred here from another hospital…”
Hearing Joshua’s name, Josephine let go of Patricia.
Patricia immediately understood, fetched Josephine a pair of slippers, and the two of them went out arm in arm to see what was happening.
The ER doctor ran over, asking, “What’s the situation?”
The man replied, “I don’t know what happened! His family hired my car to transfer him, but halfway there, someone stopped us… Two men held me down, then another man got in, and in just a few swipes, he ended up like this.”
“I was afraid he’d die in my car, but I was also scared I’d be committing a crime if I dumped him, so I rushed him here.”
The doctor took a quick look and said gravely:
“External injuries, severe head trauma, lower body mutilation, and… two fingers missing.”
“Where are his severed fingers?”
“I don’t know.”
“Go check your car.

“Bethany, notify the neurosurgery, orthopedics, and thoracic surgery doctors for a consultation, and ask Dr. Maynard to come as well.”
“No need to ask, I’m here.”
Zachery walked over, wearing a white coat and a mask.
The driver, trembling as he went to look for the severed fingers, ran into Zachery and gasped, his hair standing on end.
“Y–y–y–you…”
Zachery looked down at the driver with a calm and composed demeanor.
The driver stared blankly for a moment, then decided he must have been mistaken.
The man who cut off the fingers hadn’t worn glasses and had a sinister, hellish aura.
But this doctor had a gentle, gentlemanly air–how could they possibly be the same person?!

The driver returned to his senses and, still trembling, went to look for the fingers.
Witnessing Joshua’s miserable state, Josephine felt much better inside.
She whispered to Patricia, “Serves him right,” then looked up to see Zachery approaching and stopping in front of her.
Josephine saw Zachery’s eyes, bloodshot veins glinting in the light.
He smelled of dust, and perhaps… blood?
But the scent of blood could have drifted over from Joshua, who was being wheeled into the operating room.
Zachery looked at Josephine’s small, pale face; her skin had lost its luster from those few drops of the drug.
“Are you feeling better?” he asked.
Josephine replied, “I’m fine now.”
“Are you going to save him?” Josephine asked Zachery.
Zachery saw the wisdom in Josephine’s eyes, as if she already knew his answer would be “yes.” But he hesitated, afraid to see disappointment in her gaze.
