Taking the Fall for a Fool novel Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Everyone turned to look for the owner of the voice.

Henry Cromwell, a lawyer dressed in a neat suit, was holding an autopsy report above his head.

At Ms. Natalie Hoffman’s request, I submitted a formal request to a higher authority to perform a second autopsy. The report in

my hands contains the truth.

David’s, Nick’s, and Mia’s expressions instantly shifted.

Before the police analyzed the fingerprints, I had come up with a backup plan.

I spoke to a professional lawyer and hired him to get a forensic pathologist of a higher standing to conduct a second autopsy. I’d

asked him to get all of this done without Nick knowing, of course.

Once David betrayed me, that would’ve been my only shot at turning things around.

Under the curious gazes of everyone around him, Henry slowly flipped open the report.

According to the report, the deceased’s time of death was around 2:00 am. I have reason to believe that the time of death on Dr.

Carter’s report has been falsified, said Henry.

Nick’s eyes widened in shock, and he began to stammer as he spoke.

HHow dare you accuse me of this? Based on my experience as a forensic pathologist, I also have reason to believe that your

autopsy report is unreliable.

Are you sure you want to question the doctor who conducted this autopsy, Dr. Carter?Henry raised a brow at him.

Nick scoffed arrogantly. How am I supposed to trust the results if the autopsy was done by some amateur you picked off the

streets?

When Henry flipped to the page with the forensic pathologist’s name on it, I burst into laughter.

The person who performed the autopsy is your mentor. Do you have anything else to say about that?

Nick had questioned the skills of a senior forensic pathologist who’d taught him all that he knew.

He suddenly began to blush from embarrassment. Subsequently, he awkwardly lowered his head and refused to utter another

word.

I was staring at Mia with a strong gaze now. Upon noticing this, David reached forward to shield her from me.

It couldn’t have been Mia. She’d always been hardworking and responsible. You’re the one who’s careless and constantly makes mistakes. Do you know how often Mia has to clean up your messes?he argued.

I found his statements laughable. Was he even aware of what he was saying?

During work, Mia constantly got into trouble, and I’d always been the one to fix her mistakes.

Yeah, so she couldn’t have given the patient penicillin by accident. Natalie must’ve been the one who made that error. She’s just trying to blame Mia for her mistake,Nick added.

I crossed my arms and stared at Nick. As someone who falsified an autopsy report, I don’t think you’re in a position to offer your opinion on this matter.

Nick was struggling to come up with a retort. Eventually, he grew emotional and yelled, I just made an error, that’s all!

There’s always a margin of error. This doesn’t prove that I tampered with the report. You can’t just accuse me of falsifying the

report!
