(Jasper’s POV)
“Do you still love me?”

“I’m not asking you to choose me. I’m not asking you to leave Dorian or forgive everything I did. I’m just asking you to be honest. With yourself. With me. If you love me, stop pushing me away. Fight for us to be together instead of fighting with yourself.”
I plead, desperation making my voice thick. Why can’t she see how much I love her? That I didn’t mean to hide the fact I regained my memories from her?
was just afraid, terrified at the thought she would pull away.
Scarlett stares at me, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. For a moment, I think she might actually say yes. That she might admit what I can see written all over her face.
But then something shifts. Her expression hardens, and she steps back, pulling my hands off her shoulders.
“Jasper Blake.” The way she calls my name cuts deeper than any knife could. “I admit, I still have feelings for you. But those feelings are not strong enough for me to forget the past, to start over with you.”
Shaking off my hands, she heads for the door. Her voice is cold now, detached. “After today, I won’t come to see you again. Take care of yourself.”
Panic claws at my chest. She can’t leave. Not like this. Not when Morgan’s still out there.
“Scarlett, wait. There’s something I need to tell you-”
“Find someone else to take care of you, Jasper. I’m sure Virginia would be happy to step in.”
“This isn’t about that. You’re in danger-”
“The only danger I’m in is from you.” She walks out, and I give chase, pain slicing through my body. The injury from the accident hasn’t fully healed. And the leg, the leg that got injured in the storm five years ago, is acting up.
“Someone tried to kill you! The accident wasn’t random. It was targeted. Morgan-”
But she’s already gone, her footsteps echoing down the hallway.

No. No, this can’t be happening.

I lunge after her, ignoring the pull of the IV in my arm. The hospital gown tangles around my legs as I stumble through the doorway, nearly falling.
“Scarlett, please. Just listen-”
“I don’t want to hear it.”
“I’m trying to protect you!” The words come out desperate, urgent.
But she doesn’t slow down. Doesn’t even look back.
I push harder, my bare feet slapping against the cold linoleum. My head spins. My legs feel weak, unsteady.
The doctors warned me about pushing too hard. About getting out of bed too soon.
But I don’t care. All I care about is stopping her. Making her understand.
Keeping her safe.
“Please!” My voice cracks. “You don’t understand. Morgan is-‘
My foot catches on something. The gown, maybe. Or a wire. I reach out, trying to catch myself on the wall, but my hand finds only air.
The world tilts sideways.
The floor rushes up to meet me. I hear the c***k before I feel it–my shoulder hitting the ground, my head bouncing off the linoleum.
Pain explodes through my skull. White hot and blinding.
“Jasper!”
Virginia.
My heart sinks. Scarlett didn’t come back. Despite the pain flaring in my chest at that knowledge, I still try to push myself up, to keep chasing. But my arms won’t cooperate. Everything feels disconnected, wrong.
Virginia’s voice sounds far away, like she’s calling from the end of a tunnel.
“Don’t move. Oh God, don’t move.”
Suddenly she’s beside me, her hands gentle on my face. I can smell her perfume–a strong mixture of chemicals so different from my Scarlett’s. It makes my stomach churn.

“You idiot.” Her voice breaks. “You stupid, reckless idiot.”
I try to tell her I’m fine, but the words come out garbled. My vision blurs.
“Someone get help!” she shouts. “We need a doctor!”
Footsteps pound down the hallway. Multiple voices overlap, urgent and concerned.
“Sir, can you hear me?”
“What happened?”
“Get a gurney. Now.”
But I don’t focus on any of them. My mind is filled with worry for Scarlett, concern for her safety. Virginia’s face hovers above mine, tears streaming down her cheeks.
“Stay with me,” she whispers. “Please, Jasper. Stay with me.”
But it’s not her I see. Scarlett’s face overlaps with hers, and all I want to do is grab her hand, hold it tight to keep her by side. To tell her about Morgan, about the danger she’s in.
I want to chase everyone away and take her to a safe place where no danger could ever reach
her.
Want to tell her that I love her. That I’ve always loved her. That even if she never forgives me, I
need her to be safe.
But my tongue feels too heavy. The words won’t form.
“Jasper?” Her hand cups my cheek. “Jasper, can you hear me?”
I manage a small nod. Even that sends pain shooting through my head.
“Don’t try to talk. Just–just hold on, okay?”
My vision darkens at the edges. I fight against it, trying to focus on her face.
She’s crying harder now, her whole body shaking.
“I’m sorry,” she says. “I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have–I didn’t mean-

I want to tell her it’s not her fault. That I’m the one who messed everything up. That she has nothing to apologize for.
But the darkness is spreading, creeping inward like fog.
“Sir, we need you to stay awake.”
