Chapter 49

Chapter 49

-Back in the Present-

Tristian

Taking Keith home was such a strange feeling. He only looked around with a blank stare and didn’t respond to anything I said. He would then sit down on the floor and pull his knees to his chest as if he didn’t belong anywhere. Coaxing him didn’t work either even when Dahlia tried to do the same.

Thinking about it sends a pang of sadness through me. What sort of life has he lived through to make him so… void of life? Dahlia only said that she saved him from the terrible woman who took him from us but who was it exactly? While I am happy… why doesn’t this feel right?

After Keith falls asleep, I make my way downstairs and spot Dahlia in the kitchen. She hums to herself in a dreamy-like manner and it makes me crack a smile. It’s nice to see her so happy.

I step forward to approach her when a certain scent reaches my nose. I tense and watch as Dahlia happily hums and makes herself a snack and some tea. She’s not only happy because of Keith! Jealousy rushes through me and I turn away. I can’t stay here or I might explode on her.

I leave the house and go out for a late run. I can’t believe she’s cheating on me with another man! My blood boils at the idea and I find myself punching trees in the woods. Once I find out who it is, I’ll tear him to shreds!

I growl lowly and punch harder making my knuckles bleed. It’s faint but I could smell his scent all over her. She’s so different now… that happiness and joy can’t be just from Keith’s presence.

Sure, I’ve been neglecting her with my mind being on getting Daisy to be mine. My desires haven’t been towards Dahlia at all which I can admit easily. But that’s no excuse to be screwing around with some random prick! Are there others? I punch the tree hard again and snarl under my breath.

“You have nothing to be mad at. Silas’ faint voice startles me. ‘You’ve been with plenty of others as well. And you’re trying to get our old true mate back. Don’t be a hypocrite. It’s not a good look.

It’s been so long since Silas has spoken to me! I grit my teeth though as the first thing he does is scold me. “I’ve never done it on purpose though.” One-night stands are something I always regret. Every time I drink I end up waking in bed with a stranger but drinking helps with my stress and grief.

“You’ve never told Dahlia about them but she always knows. Can’t be mad now can you?’ Silas sighs. ‘Something isn’t right though. You know what I mean, right?”

This makes me pause. “Yes… nothing is right. I know Keith is my son… how couldn’t he be? It’s just… I don’t believe it either you know?” I slide down against a tree and sit on the ground. “We had a daughter… so how can this child be a boy?”

I find myself reliving that day again. Dahlia’s terrible screams of pain and sorrow… my heart breaking… holding that still little body… it still haunts me to this day.

My eyes burn but I hold back tears. “I held her in my eyes… I saw her and even buried her myself.” I close my eyes and shudder. “None of this makes any sense… but I know I don’t have any other children either.”

I was always careful when I slept around. I only ever wanted a child with my mate after all. ‘Go and talk to Jim. He might be able to give you some insight into this situation. Silas suggests to me. I hear his voice getting fainter.

“Please don’t go…” Being an Alpha without a wolf is hard enough but with my Luna being the same way I’m surprised that no one notices. “I don’t feel so alone without you.”

‘Soon. Right now this is our punishment. I miss you too, Tristian. Now be safe. Find the truth. With that Silas is gone leaving me with an empty feeling. I slowly stand up again and dust myself off.

Silas is right. I need to go and speak with the only person who was in the room when my daughter was born. If anyone knew something about Keith, it would be Jim. I run back to my pack and head straight for Jim’s house.

I knock on the door as I open it. Jim?’ I reach out through our pack link. I sense his attention. ‘We need to talk. Come out here please! I wait for a few minutes before I see the older man walk out in some pajamas, slippers, and the old sleep beanie he always wears. He hasn’t changed much other than a couple of gray hairs.

“Greetings, Alpha. How can I be of service?” Jim asks. By the look on his face, he appears to know what I want to ask about. “I assume this is about Keith, correct?”

I nod. “That’s right. Dahlia says that Keith is our missing son who was replaced by the body of a stillborn.” That pain in my chest creeps up again but I shake it off. “I want to know if there is any possibility… that what she says is possible.”

Jim’s eyes soften with pity making me swallow hard. “I’m sorry… but no it is not possible. I was there when the child was born and it was a stillborn. Plus the child was a girl. Again… I’m sorry, Tristian,”

I clench my fists and grit my teeth. I knew it had to be the case but I still had some hope. “Then how is it possible for me to even have a child his age? Back then I was always careful… and around his age, I only ever slept with Dahlia!” I run a hand through my hair. “I just don’t get it! Jim, do you…?” I pause.

Jim has an odd look on his face which troubles me. What’s he thinking about? I hesitate before asking. “Do you have any ideas? You seem to know something.” He hesitates and looks away. I can see the gears turning in his head from here.

What isn’t he telling me? What does he know? Jim clears his throat. “No…. I don’t know anything.” That look on his face… that tone of his voice… why is he lying to me? “It’s getting late so… you should get some rest. I’m going to do the same.”

As Jim turns and leaves, I think about calling him back. I could give him an Alpha’s order to make him tell me. It would be so easy to do but then I’d be acting like a tyrant. I sigh and walk out of his house shutting the door behind me. I’ll get to the bottom of this sooner or later… I just have to be patient. Too bad being patient has never been my strong suit.
