"Don't worry about money, it's so pedestrian. There are far more interesting things in this world than money," Alaric said.
Ethan was taken aback. The typically laid-back, affluent playboy, Alaric, uttering such sentimental words was completely out of character.
It was as if he had become a completely different person.
Something must be up.
Ethan asked cautiously, "Dude, are you in some kind of trouble? Just spill it, man. We're brothers; no need to beat around the bush."
Ethan was sure Alaric needed a favor.
Otherwise, why the sudden philosophical musings?
Hearing the seriousness in Ethan's voice, Alaric laughed, "Chill, man, I'm not asking for anything. Just inviting you for some grub."
"Oh? Something good happened? Share the joy, man," Ethan relaxed a bit.
"What else could make me happy? You know the usual," Alaric said nonchalantly.
"About a woman?" Ethan guessed right away. He knew Alaric's tastes better than Alaric's own mother.
Money might not always bring joy to Ethan, but a woman who caught his eye was a different story.
"Sort of."
"Things moving fast, huh?" Ethan's voice came through the phone.
Alaric was pouring a drink and paused, then, with a teasing tone, said, "Ethan, be honest, did you do this on purpose?"
"What do you mean 'on purpose'? I'm lost."
"The apartment you hooked me up with, making her my neighbor." Alaric didn't hide it, openly admitting that things were indeed progressing with her.
She suddenly understood how Alaric must have felt seeing her room's decor, finding it both amusing and ridiculous.
Thinking about Alaric's misunderstanding, she couldn't help but laugh and feel embarrassed at the same time.
Oh dear, Alaric actually thought she liked this kind of decor, thinking her to be childlike. For a thirty-year-old woman to privately enjoy such childish things, anyone would find it amusing.
Though it was a perfect misunderstanding, there was no way to explain it.
She began to feel ashamed.
Climbing into bed, she pulled the cover over herself, too embarrassed to face anyone.
As she was squirming, her phone rang.
Reaching out, she grabbed the phone and answered the call.
