Chapter 5
The waves began to calm, and I finally managed to catch my breath.
I clung to the jet ski with all my strength, though the pain in my belly only grew worse.
When I looked down, a vivid stream of blood trailed down my thigh, blooming in the seawater in a shocking
red cloud.
What shattered me most was the tiny life inside me-moments ago kicking and fighting-now moving only
faintly.
My hand shook as I stroked my belly, my voice breaking.
“Baby, don’t sleep. Mommy’s here… Mommy’s here…
Just hold on a little longer. Grandpa’s coming to save us.”
My vision was blurring when I suddenly heard the roar of an engine in the distance.
Lifting my head with effort, I saw Ethan steering another jet ski toward me.
“Ethan…”
I reached out a trembling hand, thinking he had finally come to his senses.
But his jet ski sped right past without so much as a glance.
That was when I saw Vanessa in his arms, the two of them laughing as they rode together across the waves.
A fresh wave of pain ripped through me, my abdomen contracting violently.
The bleeding grew heavier, and the baby inside me had been still for far too long.
Just as I was about to slip into unconsciousness, a violent jolt snapped me back.
Ethan and Vanessa were circling me on their jet ski.
They would accelerate straight at me, then swerve at the last moment, sending massive waves crashing over my craft.
The once-steady jet ski now bucked wildly. I clung to the handles to avoid being thrown off.
“Look at her!” Ethan cackled, veering toward me again.
Vanessa laughed along, “Exciting, isn’t it?”
The waves they churned tossed my jet ski up and down, my stomach slamming again and again into the
hard console.

My fingers had gone stiff; I couldn’t hold the slick, wet handles any longer.
A towering wave crashed into me, hurling me into the icy sea.
Splash! The sound of water sent their laughter into an even louder frenzy.
“Look, look! A drowned rat!” Ethan pointed at me, laughing so hard he slapped his own knee.
Vanessa was nearly doubled over. “That’s hilarious!”
I thrashed in the water, the weight of my pregnant belly making every movement clumsy.
The blood spread around me like a withering flower.
They circled me, deliberately whipping up bigger waves just to see me choke and flail.
“Help… help me…”
My weak calls only earned more piercing laughter.
And then-over the roar of the sea-a deafening chorus of engines rose in the distance.
Hundreds of Coast Guard speedboats were cutting through the waves toward us.
Ethan’s laughter stopped dead.
“What the hell is this?”
