The Bride of Endless Deaths novel Chapter 17

Chapter 7

Ethan collapsed to his knees with a splash, his voice trembling.

“Killing’s against the law! You can’t kill me!”

The commander standing nearby stepped forward quickly.

“Sir, please-calm down. He’s not worth it.”

“Dad… don’t…”

Summoning what strength I had left, I tugged at my father’s sleeve, tears streaming down my cheeks.

At once, he holstered his gun and gently brushed my tears away.

“All right. Daddy will listen to you.”

“You just focus on resting. Once you’re well, you can deal with them yourself.”

‘He turned to the medics and barked, “Get the helicopter ready. My daughter goes straight to the military

hospital.”

Then his eyes cut back to Ethan and Vanessa, who looked briefly relieved-until my father’s voice thundered

again.

“Bring those two along. Make sure they’re… well entertained.”

Both of them went limp, their faces draining of color.

“Dad! Dad, I was wrong!”

Ethan crawled forward on his knees, banging his forehead against the deck.

“Please, just give me another chance! I swear I’ll treat Sophia right!”

Vanessa’s mascara-streaked face twisted as she clutched my father’s pant leg.

“Uncle Kane, please have mercy! It’s all my fault-I’ll never do it again!”

My father kicked Vanessa’s hand aside, his voice like ice.

“Now you’re afraid? Weren’t you having fun just a moment ago?”

The roar of the helicopter blades began to drown out the rest of the world.

I lifted my wrist weakly, my eyes falling on the watch that looked so ordinary.

It was my father’s birthday gift to me-plain on the outside, but built with a military-grade GPS beacon.

If not for the signal it sent out, I might not have survived today.

Since meeting Ethan, I’d hidden my identity to avoid hurting his pride.

He’d always believed my father was just some retired old man who spent his days feeding birds in the park.

He had no idea the Kane family was a military dynasty.

My grandfather was a founding major general.

My father wore two stars on his shoulder.

My uncle had founded one of the most elite special forces units in the country.

Even my youngest uncle was the youngest doctoral advisor at the United States Institute of Technology.

“You foolish girl…”

My father’s voice softened as he wiped my tears.

‘“All

“All this for a man-was it worth making yourself suffer like this?”

I shook my head, the pain in my abdomen leaving me speechless.

He was right. For the sake of so-called love, I had dimmed my own light, and all it had earned me was

betrayal.

“Dad, I’m sorry… for making you worry.”

He shook his head, his calloused palm stroking my forehead.

“No, sweetheart. It’s my fault for not protecting you.”

The next time I opened my eyes, a harsh white light made me squint.

The sterile scent in the air told me I was in a hospital.

“Dad…” My voice was hoarse, barely recognizable.

He was on his feet instantly, the bloodshot in his eyes betraying his sleepless vigil.

“Sweetheart, you’re awake? How are you feeling?”

“The baby…”

My hand trembled as I clutched his sleeve.

“How’s the baby?”
