For Elsa, he had again and again targeted, hurt, and humiliated Lily–when Lily was the one who had once shared life and death with him as Lizzy.
And just moments ago, to protect Elsa, he had chosen to let the kidnappers kill Lily.
Simon couldn’t stop replaying Lily’s eyes in his mind.
There had been desolation and cold irony in her gaze, and Elsa’s pendant had swayed before her eyes
like a mockery.
She was always sharp–of course she had realized he was her boy.
The boy who had silently sworn to protect her, to cherish her forever.
And yet, in the end, it had been his own lips that pronounced her death.
What had he done?
“Simon, Jackson’s just trying to drive a wedge between us. Don’t listen to him…”
Seeing Simon’s tortured, remorseful face, Elsa knew he had begun to doubt her identity.
He was her greatest support, and she couldn’t afford to lose him.
She scrambled to pull him back, trembling as she said, “Yes, it must be Lily. She must have secretly read my diary to learn about us. She…”
“Ha!”
Jackson cut her off with a cold laugh. “First you claimed a fever erased your memory of the rubble. Now suddenly there’s a diary? Are you schizophrenic, Elsa? These contradictory lies- only an idiot would believe them. Only an idiot would treat you as treasure, trust you completely!”
“I…”
Elsa’s face flushed crimson as she panted.
She realized she had said too much, exposing herself.
And clearly Simon was the “idiot” Jackson meant.
Once, if Jackson had called him that, Simon would have fought him on the spot.

But now he had no face left to fight.

Because he truly was an idiot–an idiot who had hurt and abandoned his real Lizzy for a filthy impostor.
“Elsa, you really deserve to die.”
“Simon…”
Elsa was used to Simon holding her in the palm of his hand, indulging her every whim.
Hearing his cold, cutting voice made her shiver violently.
Tears streamed down her cheeks as she tried one last desperate act.
“You promised you’d always be good to me. I’m dying of a terrible illness–I don’t have long left. You said you’d protect and care for me in my final days. How can you… how can you tell me I deserve to die? It’s Jackson–he’s slandering me. He’s so close to Lily. Lily always hated me. He’s framing me for her…”
Smack!
Simon’s fury boiled over. The woman who had stolen Lizzy’s identity, stolen Lizzy’s pendant, and stolen all the warmth meant for Lily still had the gall to smear her name. He raised his hand and struck Elsa across the face.
The Bale family code forbade men to strike women.
But to him, Elsa was no longer human. If he hit her, so what?
He had always despised her schemes and slanders, even while standing at her side.
It had been only the memory of Lizzy’s warmth under the rubble that kept him there.
Now that he knew Lily was Lizzy, how could he continue to protect this beast?
“Simon…
you
hit me?”
Elsa was stunned. She had never imagined he would dare strike her. She covered her cheek, frozen in disbelief before whispering shakily.
“Elsa, hitting you is nothing. I wish I could kill you.”
Simon’s voice shook with rage and self–loathing.
Thinking of everything he had done for Elsa, and what it had cost Lily, he wanted not just to destroy her but to destroy himself.
