Sofia pushed through the glass doors and spotted Sebastian right away. He was leaning against the car, looking like a storm cloud with a cigarette dangling from his lips. Robbie was at his feet, eyes swollen and red, his shoulders shaking with every quiet sob.

“What’s going on?” Sofia called, already feeling a jolt of worry as she hurried over.

Did Sebastian see the pictures of Reese and Matthew in the company group chat? Was that why he looked so pissed?

As soon as Robbie saw her, he ran over and threw himself into her arms, letting out a fresh wail.

Sofia crouched down, fishing tissues from her bag and gently wiping his tear-streaked face. “Hey, who’s making you cry? Tell me, and I’ll handle them for you.”

“Mom doesn’t want me anymore!” Robbie hiccupped, clutching her sleeve. “I just kicked that little girl, and Mom just picked her up and walked away! I cried and she didn’t even care!”

“Aunt Sofia, who is that girl? I hqate her.”

Sofia thought for a moment. The girl always hanging around Reese? That had to be Matthew’s daughter.

She hugged Robbie close and patted his back. “It’s okay, Robbie. That girl’s really cute. Why don’t you like her?”

“Because when she’s around, Mom ignores me. I hate how Mom smiles at her,” Robbie sniffled.

Sofia gave a tiny, knowing smile and lowered her voice. “But Robbie, that girl’s not even related to your mom. You’re her real son.”

“And remember, your mom’s got a baby boy in her tummy now. That’s your real brother. When he’s born, your mom might pay even more attention to him. You’ll have to get used to sharing her.”

Robbie froze, then started crying even louder. “No! I don’t want a baby brother! I don’t want Mom anymore! Aunt Sofia, will you be my mom instead?”

He remembered how Great-grandpa was already redoing the kids’ room at the old house, making it bigger and nicer for the new baby. And mom barely talked to him these days. Was it all because of the baby?
