Kent found himself watching in bewilderment as his colleagues all seemed to be making a beeline for the exit. Each had their own excuse, but the spark of excitement on their faces was remarkably uniform.
His desk was near the CEO's office, far from the entrance, so he couldn't catch their whispers, but the buzz of gossip was palpable. This didn’t look like a rush to get work done; it was more like they were headed out for some juicy news.
The young assistant sitting nearby had already received a message on WhatsApp about the "CEO's wife" being in the break room. She quickly grabbed her thermos and made her way out, feigning busyness.
As she passed Kent, he caught her sleeve. "Where are you off to?"
The assistant turned back calmly, saying, "I'm just going to get some water."
Kent gestured to the office's water cooler in the corner. "Isn't there water right here?"
"The water just boiled. It's too hot," she replied coolly, her eyes darting impatiently toward the door. "I'll get some in the break room."
Another colleague, having also caught the signal, stood up with his thermos. "Hey, Jason, I'll come with you."
"Sure thing," Jason replied cheerfully, turning to Kent. "We'll just grab some water."
"Count me in," another colleague chimed in, picking up his laptop. "It's too warm in here anyway. I could use some fresh air."
"Me too," Jason added, grabbing his laptop. "We can discuss that project on the way."
"Include me as well," another colleague said, naturally picking up his work notebook.
Kent was left speechless. "What's this? Is there gold outside or something? Everyone's rushing out."
He shook his head in disbelief, unable to comprehend what was happening.
Brandon, having just finished a call, noticed the stream of eager colleagues heading out. His brows furrowed as he turned to Kent, who was shaking his head.
"What's going on?" Brandon asked. "Why is everyone heading out?"
"Oh, they're saying the office is too warm and they're going for some air, or the water's too hot, so they're going to the break room. Or they just need the bathroom…" Kent listed off, glancing back at Brandon. "Nothing serious, just an excuse to slack off."
Brandon's frown deepened, his gaze shifting toward the break room, hidden around the corner.
"I'll be back," Brandon said, heading out himself.
Kent was again left speechless. Even Brandon was leaving, so he hurried to follow.
------------------------
Sophia was in the break room, keeping an eye on little Theresa.
Although the young girl had visited several times, the spacious and elegantly designed break room was a wonderland for her. A small succulent on the table was enough to captivate her for ages, bombarding Sophia with questions.
The little girl's curiosity was boundless: "Mom, what's this?" "Why is it called a succulent if it has no juice?" "Why is it green inside and red at the tips?" "Why are its leaves so chubby? What's inside?" "Do you think it tastes good?" "What happens when it outgrows this tiny pot?" On and on it went, her questions reflecting an insatiable curiosity about the world.
With just Sophia and Theresa in the break room, there was no pressure of disturbing others, so Sophia patiently answered her daughter's endless stream of questions with gentle explanations.
