Time freezes as I watch emotions flash across Sage’s face shock, hurt, understanding, and then… pure rage. But not at me. Through our bond, I feel her absolute certainty in my loyalty even as her power builds like a gathering storm.
“Really, Eris?” The fury in Sage’s voice could melt steel. “This is what you’ve been reduced to?”
Eris’s triumphant smirk falters slightly. This clearly isn’t the reaction she expected. “I merely gave him what he truly wants. What the kingdom needs. He was quite eager to-”
Sage’s growl stops her short but she isn’t deterred for long.
“You should be thanking me.” Eris sits up, letting the sheet fall away deliberately. “I’m offering a solution that saves everyone’s dignity. You can maintain your position in the healing wing, avoid the embarrassment of public rejection-”
“The only embarrassment here is you.” Sage’s power fills the room, making the air crackle. “Sneaking into another wolf’s bed like a common-”
“Like a proper mate for a king.” Eris’s eyes narrow. “One with the right bloodline, the right connections. One who understands what this kingdom needs.”
Through our bond, I feel Sage’s contempt warring with pity. “What this kingdom needs? You mean what you need? Power, position, control – that’s all you’ve ever wanted.”
“I want what’s best for our people.” But Eris’s perfect mask slips further with each word. “The nobles support me. The council-”
“The council sees you for exactly what you are.” Sage moves closer, her power making Eris shrink back despite her exposed position. “A desperate wolf who’d rather destroy what she can’t have than see someone else succeed.”
“You know nothing about-”
“I know everything about you.” Sage’s voice could cut diamond. “I’ve watched you manipulate and scheme, spread poison through whispers and lies. But this?” She gestures at the bed with disgust. “This is pathetic even for you.”
Eris finally rises, wrapping the sheet around herself with what dignity she can muster. “You think you’ve won? That the pack will ever truly accept you? That your tainted bloodline-”
The temperature in the room drops as Sage steps forward. “My bloodline? You mean the one that saved our
warriors from mutant wolves? The one that healed your own supporters after they attacked me? That bloodline?
“I
Through our bond, I feel Sage’s controlled fury, her power building like a storm about to break. But underneath that, absolute certainty in us, in what we are together.

comprehend what we are to each other. What true mates share. You offer political alliance? I offer him my heart, my soul, my absolute trust. You think seeing you naked in our bed would make me doubt that?”
Eris’s composure cracks completely. “He was about to-
”
“To throw you out.” I move to stand beside Sage, letting my power join with hers. “Like the worthless intruder you are.”
“The Northern territories won’t stand for this insult.” Eris backs toward the door, her threats falling flat. “The
council-”
“Can find themselves a new puppet.” Sage’s smile shows teeth. “Now get out before I decide to show you exactly what my ‘tainted‘ bloodline is capable of.”
“My King.” Eris turns to me, all fake vulnerability. “Tell her. Tell her how you were about to-”
“Like I said, the only thing I was about to do,” I growl, “was throw you out myself. I can’t for the life of me remember why I ever found you attractive. Now, when I look at you all I feel is disgust.”
Her mask finally cracks, showing real fear as she faces our united front. Through our bond, I feel Sage’s absolute faith in me, her love and trust a shield against Eris’s manipulations. The depth of it staggers me.
Sage’s power fills the room, making Eris stumble back. “Now get out. And if you ever try to manipulate my mate again, these powers you’re so afraid of? You’ll learn exactly why the ancient healing packs were feared.”
Eris flees, grabbing her discarded clothes as she runs. The door slams behind her, leaving us alone with the tension crackling between us. Through our bond, I feel her need to erase any trace of Eris’s presence, to mark me as hers in every way possible.
“She tried to take what’s mine.” Her voice holds possession and promise as she shoves me toward the shower. ‘ I won’t have her scent on you for another second.”
“Shower.” Sage’s voice holds no room for argument. “Now. I want her scent off you.”
I hesitate. “Sweetling-”
“Now.” She shoves me toward the bathroom, her touch electric against my skin. “I’ll handle this.‘
Through our bond, I feel her determination mixed with something darker, more primal. Her possessive need matches my own as I step under the hot spray.
I hear her movements as she strips the bed with controlled fury. Feel her satisfaction as she burns the sheets Eris touched, her power turning them to ash in the courtyard below. Each gesture is deliberate, reclaiming our space from the intruder who dared violate it.
The hot water sluices over my skin, but it’s Sage’s presence in my mind that truly cleanses. Her absolute faith in me still staggers – how quickly she saw through Eris’s manipulation, how completely she trusts our bond. I don’t deserve such certainty, such unwavering belief, but I’ll spend my life trying to be worthy of it.
When the water runs cold, I realize I’ve been standing here feeling her through our bond, letting her emotions wash over me more thoroughly than any shower could. When I emerge minutes later, I find the bed stripped completely, fresh sheets cover the mattress, and in the center…
