Sage

I barely recognize myself in the mirror. The deep blue silk makes my pale skin glow, silver embroidered moonflowers climbing from hem to bodice. My silverblonde hair is partially braided with crystal beads that catch light like stars, the rest falling in soft waves down my back.

Perfect,Iris declares, adjusting my pendant so it nestles just right. You look like moonlight itself. Just wait until Alaric sees you!

I look terrified,I correct, smoothing my skirts for the hundredth time.

You look like you belong. She squeezes my hands. And you do.

The great hall takes my breath away hundreds of crystal chandeliers casting rainbow light over gathered nobles from every pack in the kingdom. I wait at the top of the grand staircase as protocol demands, heart thundering.

Then I see him.

Alaric stands below in formal Alpha regalia, power wrapped around him like a cloak. But when his eyes find me, everything else fades away. His expression makes my heart stop pure awe, like he’s seeing something precious and rare.

I descend carefully, remembering Iris’s lessons about grace and poise. Whispers follow my progress: —the healer everyone’s talking aboutsaved the Lycan King himselfbut still wolfless-

When I reach the bottom, Alaric extends his hand. The gesture is formal, proper, but his eyes burn with things we can’t say publicly. He doesn’t need to, though. It’s written all over his face and I nearly stumble when my knees go weak from his look alone.

You take my breath away, sweetling,he murmurs as he leads me to the head table.

I manage the formal greetings without stumbling, remembering to bow just the right depth to visiting Alphas. Queen Helena’s approving nod warms my chest.

Alaric raises his hand for silence, and the great hall immediately stills. Power rolls off him in waves as he addresses the gathered wolves:

Welcome, honored representatives of all packs. Your presence here marks a historic moment the first time in generations that we gather not for war or treaties, but for healing and hope.

His voice carries to every corner as he continues: While political matters will certainly be discussed in coming days, we’re here primarily because of one person. His eyes find me, filled with pride. Many of you have heard stories of the healer who saved warriors when traditional methods failed. Who developed new techniques that work against mutations we’ve never seen before.

My cheeks heat as hundreds of eyes turn to me.

What you may not know,he continues, is that months ago, this same healer found an injured wolf and without knowing he was the Lycan King, without asking for anything in return, she risked everything to help

him.His voice softens. To help me.

Murmurs ripple through the crowd.

In the days ahead, she will share her knowledge freely with all who wish to learn. This is the kind of strength our packs need not just power, but compassion. Not just tradition, but innovation.

The way he looks at me makes my heart stop. Like I’m something precious, something worth protecting.

Then the music starts, and Alaric leads me onto the dance floor. All those hours practicing with Garrett pay off as we move perfectly in sync.

You’ve been practicing,he says softly, pride in his voice.

I didn’t want to embarrass you.

His hand tightens on my waist. You could never.

As we move across the floor, I notice other changes in the great hall. The moonflowers from my garden have been woven into every decoration, their sweet scent mixing with formal roses. It feels like a declaration my place here made visible in every detail.

They’re all watching us,I whisper to Alaric.

Let them. His hand presses warm against my lower back until there’s no space between us. A blush colors my cheeks at the feel of his hard member pressed to my hip. Let them see exactly what I see when I look at you.

And what’s that?I nearly moan the words.

His eyes bleed slightly amber. Everything worth fighting for.

Young wolves who I’ve helped heal beam at me as we pass. Warriors nod respectfully. Even some visiting nobles seem thoughtful rather than dismissive.

For a few perfect moments, everything else fades away. Just us, moving together like we were made for this dance.

But Eris’s whispered conversations continue. I catch fragments: -wait until she arrivesperfect timing

put her in her place-She keeps glancing at the main doors like she’s waiting for something.

The night progresses with more dances, more greetings, more careful navigation of pack politics. I start to relax slightly, thinking maybe I’ve worried for nothing.

The evening seems perfect everything I never dared dream of having. Jealousy tries to claw at me when Alaric excuses himself to dance with others but I try to remind myself that he’s only being polite. Queen Helena distracts me by drawing me into conversation with visiting healers, proudly introducing me as our pack’s healing innovator.Young wolves from other territories ask eager questions about my techniques, their curiosity overwhelming any prejudice about my wolfless state.

Even Victoria seems subdued, perhaps noting how many powerful wolves seek my attention. But something about Eris’s calculated smile makes my skin crawl. She keeps checking the time, whispering with her ladiesin- waiting. Their excitement feels predatory, like wolves circling wounded prey.
