Chapter 65

Something in his tone eases my earlier doubts. This doesn’t sound like a man with regrets.

“I have news,” he says, growing more serious. “I’ve convinced the council to lift your isolation.”

Hope blooms in my chest. “Really?”

“With conditions.” His jaw tightens slightly. “You can’t work in the healing wing. Not yet. Not until we clear your name.”

The hope withers, but I expected as much. “I understand.”

“Hey.” He tips my chin up. “This is temporary. We’ll prove their accusations false.”

“And until then?”

“Until then,” his eyes glint with something dangerous and promising, “we continue your training. Every night. Can’t have my mate unable to defend herself.”

The word ‘mate’ slips out so naturally he doesn’t seem to notice, but it sends warmth spreading through my chest. He’s choosing me, and I let that knowledge take hold in my heart. Even if the worry his fated mate could come along and ruin everything still lingers in the shadows.

“Every night?” I try to sound innocent but fail miserably.

“Mmm.” He pulls me closer, nuzzling my neck where his marks stand out. “Though if you keep looking at me like that, we might not get much actual training done.”

“Like what?”

“Like you’re remembering exactly what my mouth can do to you.”

My whole body flushes at his words, at the memories they evoke. But before I can respond, voices in the hallway remind us we’re not alone in the world.

He steps back reluctantly. “Another meeting. I have to go. The council meeting isn’t for an hour,” he says, noting my questioning look about him leaving. “But I need to be seen attending to normal duties. We have to be… careful.”

The word sends a chill through me. “Because of the accusations?”

“Because there are wolves watching for any sign of weakness.” His hands frame my face. “Any excuse to question my judgment.”

“Am I?” The words slip out before I can stop them. “A weakness?”

His kiss steals my breath, possessive and tender at once. “You’re my strength. Never doubt that.”

When he pulls back, his eyes have bled fully amber. “And about last night…” A growl enters his voice. “Your innocence drives my beast crazy. Knowing no one else has ever touched you, ever seen you come undone…”

My whole body flushes at his words, at the memories they evoke.

“I can smell your doubt, sweetling.” His thumb traces my bottom lip. “Smell your worry that your inexperience somehow disappointed me.” He laughs softly at my startled look. “You forget how well I know your scent now. How well I know you.”

“It’s just…” I bite my lip. “You must have had more experienced…”

“Stop.” His voice carries Alpha command. “Last night was perfect because it was you. Because every gasp, every moan, every shy touch was real. Was mine to discover.”

The possession in his voice makes me shiver. “Even when I didn’t know what to do?”

“Especially then.” He presses his forehead to mine. “Teaching you pleasure, watching you learn what your body can feel… it nearly broke my control completely.
