Chapter 67

We stroll through paths I helped plant, past moonflowers that still bloom despite everything. She stops to touch one, studying its silvery petals.

“These flowers,” she says carefully, “they’re not native to our territories. They grow wild in the northern mountains, where the old healing packs once lived.”

Something stirs in my memory – a woman’s voice singing about moonlight and healing. But it slips away before I can grasp it.

“The moon remembers what minds forget,” Helena continues cryptically. “And blood calls to blood, no matter how long buried.” 1

Before I can ask what she means, she’s gone, leaving me with more questions than answers.

Later I find Iris in the library, surrounded by dusty books. “Thank the moon,” she exclaims. “I need help organizing these old records. Since you can’t work in the healing wing…”

The task gives my hands purpose, even if it’s not what I’m trained for. As we work, I notice patterns in the records – territory changes, pack movements, unexplained disappearances.

“Look at this.” I show Iris a page. “Three small packs in the northern territories just… vanished. No explanation.

“When?”

“About twenty years ago.” Around when I would have been born.

As I sort through records, Helena’s words about blood calling to blood keep echoing in my mind. The

disappeared packs, my strange pendant, the moonflowers that feel so familiar…

“The old healing packs,” I murmur, scanning texts. “They were different somehow?”

“Special,” Iris confirms. “The histories say they had abilities beyond normal healing. Some say they could even heal soul-wounds, help lost wolves find their way back to their human sides.”

“What happened to them?”

“They just… vanished. Like they never existed.” She eyes my pendant thoughtfully. “Though some say their bloodlines still surface sometimes. In unexpected places.”

His scent reaches me before I see him, making my whole body tingle with memories of last night. The way he touches me now carries such intent – each brush of his fingers promising more to come.

“You smell like libraries and sunshine,” he murmurs, nuzzling my neck. “And me.”

My breath catches as his teeth graze his marks. “Someone might see…”

“Let them.” But he pulls back slightly, though his eyes burn amber. “Let them all see that you’re mine.”

“Even with the accusations? The suspicions?”

“Especially then.” His hand cups my face. “Let them see that their King stands beside you. That I trust you even if they don’t.”

“Thank you,” I whisper, beaming up at him.

“You never have to thank me, sweetling. Now, how was your first day of freedom?” he asks, still trailing his fingers over his marks.

“Some parts better than others.” I try to sound casual despite my racing heart.

“Mm.” His fingers slip beneath my collar where more evidence of his love bites is hiding. “Ready for more training tonight?”

Heat floods my cheeks at his tone. Iris makes gagging sounds and excuses herself, muttering about disgusting lovebirds.

“You’re blushing again, sweetling.” His voice drops lower. “Remembering last night’s… lesson?”
