Chapter 69

“They’ll die anyway if we do nothing.” The head healer meets my eyes. “I vote we try it.

I look at Sage – my fierce, gentle mate who holds her head high despite their accusations. “Do it.”

She works quickly, sure hands mixing antidotes while nobles mutter darkly. I watch her in her element, graceful despite their hostility.

“How exactly,” Eris’s voice cuts through the tension, “does a supposedly innocent healer know so much about ancient poisons?”

Sage’s hands still for just a moment before continuing her work. “The healing texts mention them. Any healer who studies history-”

“Oh yes,” Eris interrupts smoothly. “You do spend a great deal of time in the library lately. Reading about all sorts of interesting things, I imagine.”

The implication hangs heavy in the air. Several council members shift uncomfortably.

“If you’d prefer,” Sage says quietly, never looking up from her mixing, “I can stop preparing the antidote. Though I wonder how you’ll explain to these warriors’ families why you let them die to spite me.”

Pride floods my chest at her quiet strength, even as my beast rages at those who force her to defend herself while saving lives.

“My son,” one of the warriors’ mothers steps forward, “I trust her to try. Please, let her help him.”

The personal plea changes the energy in the room. Other pack members murmur agreement. Even some nobles look conflicted – it’s one thing to condemn an accused murderer, another to watch pack members die from pride.

As Sage works, I notice something else. The head healer watches her techniques with growing interest, especially her handling of the moonflower essence.

“That method,” she says suddenly. “It’s like nothing I’ve seen before. But… I once read about the ancient healing packs using similar techniques.”

Sage’s hands falter slightly. “I… I’m not sure where I learned it. It just feels natural.”

The head healer gives me a significant look. Another piece of the puzzle, another connection to investigate. Within hours, the warriors’ symptoms improve. By nightfall, they’re conscious and healing.

“This proves nothing,” Victoria declares. “Saving them now doesn’t erase her crimes.”

“But it does raise questions,” the head healer counters. “About who had access to moon lotus, a poison thought lost to time. About who could modify nightshade so precisely.”

Sage meets my eyes across the healing wing, relief warring with lingering hurt. She saved three lives today, yet still stands accused of taking others.

But watching her work, seeing her determination to help despite everything, only strengthens my resolve. Someone tried to poison my warriors twice – once with modified herbs, and once with poisoned lies about their healer.

My lycan roars in frustration. We’re so close to proving Sage’s innocence, but someone keeps moving against us, always one step ahead.

Then I catch it – a familiar floral scent clinging to the guard’s uniform. One I’ve smelled before, in Eris’s private quarters. In my concern for my warriors, I hadn’t noticed it earlier, but now it’s unmistakable.

As much as I loathe to admit it, this hunt is going to require patience. But most predators reveal themselves eventually, through their own arrogance, if only you give them the chance.

I may not be allowed to examine our dead warriors, but I can sure as hell investigate the living who conspire against my mate.

“Garrett.” My voice carries deadly calm. “Have our most trusted wolves watch Eris. And find out exactly where Daphne goes when she thinks no one’s looking.”

Because some traditions need to be broken.
