Chapter 71
Sage
The training room feels different in early morning solitude. My muscles remember the moves now, body flowing through sequences Alaric has drilled into me night after night. I catch glimpses of myself in the mirrored walls – not the scared omega from Blackthorn anymore, but someone stronger. Someone who knows how to fight back.
“Your form is improving.”
I don’t startle at Iris’s voice. Another change – I’m more aware of my surroundings now, harder to sneak up on.
“Alaric’s a good teacher.” When he’s not distracting me with other activities, I don’t add.
“Speaking of my brother’s… teaching.” Her grin turns wicked. “Those marks on your neck are new.”
Before I can sputter a response, voices approach the training room. Eris enters with her usual entourage, including Victoria and three other noble wolves.
“Well, well.” Eris’s smile shows teeth. “The little poison–maker, practicing her… skills.”
I continue my exercises, remembering Alaric’s lessons about staying calm. “Good morning, Eris. Victoria.”
“You know,” Victoria circles me slowly, “some might question why you need combat training. Planning something violent?”
“Just obeying my king’s decree.” I shift my stance subtly, keeping them all in view. “Everyone trains here.”
“Everyone who belongs here,” Eris corrects. “Though I suppose when you’re warming the Alpha’s bed, certain allowances are made.”
Old Sage would have flinched at those words. Would have retreated, made herself smaller. But I’m not that
omega anymore.
“Interesting choice of words,” I say mildly. “Considering how long you tried and failed to warm that same bed.”
Her perfect mask cracks slightly. “You dare-”
“I dare many things these days.” I meet her eyes steadily. “Including wondering why you’re so interested in my relationship with Alaric. Jealousy isn’t a good look on you, Eris.”
Victoria moves first – a grab for my arm that would once have terrified me. But my body moves on instinct now, deflecting her grip and using her momentum to send her stumbling.
“Careful,” I warn as she rights herself, “Wouldn’t want anyone to get hurt.”
“Is that a threat?” Eris demands. “After two warriors dead from your poisons-”
“Three warriors alive because of my antidotes,” I counter. “Or did you forget that part? But if you truly believe me a murderer, I wonder at your bravery in angering me.”
She signals one of her followers to circle behind me. I pivot smoothly, keeping space around me just like Alaric

taught me. When the wolf lunges, I sidestep, letting her crash into Victoria instead.
“Stop dancing and fight!” Victoria snarls, eyes bleeding gold.
“Why?” I raise an eyebrow. “So you can claim I attacked noble wolves? I’m not as naive as I used to be. You made sure of that.”
More wolves gather in the doorway, drawn by the commotion. I notice some of the warriors I saved among them, watching with interest.
“You think you’re so clever.” Eris’s voice drips venom. “Playing the innocent healer while corrupting our Alpha. But we know what you really are – a murderer, a poison–maker, a-”
“A wolf who’s tired of your games.” I cut her off, steel entering my voice. “You want to question my past? Fine. But remember this – I’ve saved more lives in this pack than you’ve ever bothered to notice existed.”
Victoria makes another grab, faster this time. But hours of training with Alaric – who moves like lightning- have honed my reflexes. I duck under her arm, sweep her legs just so, and she hits the mat with a satisfying thud.
Silence falls.
Then one of the watching warriors coughs – a sound suspiciously like hidden laughter.
“This has been fun,” I tell the gaping nobles, “but some of us have actual duties to attend to. You know, healing, helping, contributing to the pack?” I head for the door, then pause. “Oh, and Victoria? Your left side is still wide open when you attack. Might want to work on that.”
I sense Alaric in the hallway before I leave, his power carefully controlled but his eyes burning amber as he takes
in the scene.
“Everything alright here?” His voice carries Alpha authority.
“Just some friendly training, my King,” I say smoothly, noting how Eris and Victoria scramble to look composed.
His face reveals nothing, but I catch the pride in his scent as I pass him. We maintain careful distance, though my skin tingles with awareness of him,
Word spreads quickly through the pack about the training room incident. I notice subtle changes in how wolves react to me – fewer averted eyes, more direct greetings. The warriors I saved now nod respectfully when I pass, one even winking at me after hearing about Victoria’s fall.
But Eris and her circle are far from finished. I catch their whispered conversations: “-needs to be dealt with differently–““–clearly has Alpha protection–““–time to accelerate our plans-”
Their plotting concerns me less than it once would have. Let them scheme. I’m not the same omega who cowered at their threats.
I find Alaric waiting for me in our secret training room, I tell him about the confrontation properly.
“Show me,” he demands, eyes gleaming. “Show me exactly how you took Victoria down.”
