Memories torment me as I try to rest – every time she asked what she meant to me, every opportunity I had to tell her the truth. The night in the training room when she gave herself to me so trustingly. The mornings after when she looked at me like I hung the moon.

All while I kept this secret from her.

“She is OURS,” my beast rages. “Has always been ours. Why did we hide it?”

“Because I’m a fool,” I tell the empty room.

“Yes, you are.” Garrett appears with reports about the attack. “But a fool who can still fix this.”

“How?” The word comes out more desperate than I intend. “You didn’t see her face, Garrett. Didn’t feel her pain through the bond.”

“No, but I saw her face every time you pulled away in public. Every time you maintained ‘proper distance‘ while knowing exactly what she was to you.”

His words cut deep because they’re true. I thought I was being noble, giving her freedom to choose. Instead, I made her feel unwanted. Unworthy.

Just like Cassius did.

Pain from my wounds is nothing compared to the agony of knowing I hurt my mate so deeply. Phantom howls at the memory of our mate’s distress, at the betrayal in her violet eyes before she turned from me.

“You’re an idiot,” Garrett interrupts my spiral, reminding me I’m not alone. “A complete and utter idiot. But not necessarily an irredeemable idiot.”

I growl at disrespect, but he’s not wrong. The memory of her words pierces deeper than any mutant wolf’s teeth: Were you embarrassed to be mated to a wolfless omega just like he was?

“I was trying to protect her.”

“By doing exactly what her first mate did?” Iris appears behind Garrett, fury rolling off her in waves. “By keeping the bond secret until it suited you?”

“It wasn’t like that-”

“No?” Her eyes flash gold. “Then what was it like? Because from where I’m standing, you took away her choice. Just like Cassius did.”

My beast snarls at the comparison, but guilt chokes me. Because she’s right. In trying to protect Sage, I’ve hurt her in ways I never imagined.

“The pack needs answers,” Garrett says more gently. “About the attack, about how they got through our wards

“And about Sage’s transformation,” Iris adds. “The nobles are already gathering, discussing implications.”

Of course they are. My mate’s spectacular awakening – both wolf and power – changes everything. Some will see it as proof of her heritage, others as a threat to their authority.

Reports flood in as I hobble my way to the council chamber, each worse than the last. The mutant wolves moved with military precision, targeting specific areas. Someone had to let them through our defenses.

“The timing is suspicious,” Lord Marcus notes when we convene. “Just as we were discussing the danger of healing pack abilities…”

“You mean just as you were trying to restrict those abilities that saved lives today?” I barely contain my beast’s

rage.

“Those same abilities that drove the creatures back?”

“Her power is impressive,” Victoria’s father agrees smoothly. “Which only proves how dangerous it could be if turned against us.”

Before I can respond, more wolves arrive with news of the attack’s aftermath. Watching them report, I notice something – how they reference “Lady Sage” now, how they speak of her healing with new respect.

“Her wolf is pure white,” whispers spread through the room. “Like the ancient healers.”

Every noble family has an opinion about what this means. Some suggest it proves her innocent of past accusations – surely a corrupted soul couldn’t manifest such a pure form. Others argue more frantically that her power makes her more dangerous than ever.

But it’s the warriors‘ reactions that matter most. Those who fought beside her, who saw her stand against the mutant wolves without hesitation despite being wolfless at the time.

“She tried to protect the younger wolves,” one tells the council. “Put herself between them and danger before she even had her wolf.”

“And after?” Lord Marcus demands. “After this… transformation?”

“She was magnificent,” the warrior says simply. “Powerful but controlled. Protective not aggressive.”

I catch Eris watching these discussions with calculated interest. Her perfect mask shows appropriate awe at Sage’s awakening, but something lurks behind her eyes. She’s already planning how to use this development to her advantage.

My mate’s true nature is undeniable now. The last heir of the healing packs, come into her power. The nobles can fear her all they want, but they can’t deny what she is anymore.

If only I hadn’t denied it to her for so long. When I think she could have known who she truly was months ago if I’d only bitten her, claimed her as mine the moment I recognized our bond, I hate myself a little bit more. Will she hate me too when she realizes that truth?

“You need to fix this,” Iris finds me later, after endless meetings about border security. “She thinks you were ashamed of her.”

“Never.” The word comes out more growl than speech.
