She’d already contacted the legal team—Covington Group’s lawyers were the best in the business. Kendall would have to face the consequences for what he’d done, and those reckless online gossip sites spreading rumors without a shred of evidence would pay too.
“Ramona, you can’t let them off easy! To slander someone with such disgusting lies, it’s vile, absolutely vile!”
Nova and the others were furious on Ramona’s behalf. Ever since they’d seen the news that morning, they hadn’t done anything else but try to clear things up in their group chats. But their efforts felt insignificant compared to a single phone call from Ramona herself.
“I won’t,” Ramona replied softly.
She never let a grudge go unanswered, and she’d never shown mercy to anyone who tried to hurt her.
“I wonder if Mr. Jordon has seen the news yet? If he has, surely he wouldn’t…” Nova began, then stopped short as a worried thought crossed her mind. She glanced anxiously at Ramona. “Ramona, you don’t think Mr. Jordon would actually believe any of these lies, do you?”
Nova’s words stirred a flicker of unease in Ramona’s eyes. But when she thought of Ethan, her answer came out almost instinctively: “He wouldn’t believe it.”
She hadn’t known Ethan long, and he didn’t know her that well, either. Still, Ramona felt certain, Ethan wasn’t that kind of person.
Even so, this kind of rumor could cause a lot of trouble. She decided she ought to let him know, so she dialed his number right away.
The call didn’t go through; his line was busy.
He’s probably tied up with something, she thought.
Just then, someone knocked at her office door. Holden’s distinctive voice carried through before she could answer, “Ms. Jarrett, do you have a moment?”
Before Ramona could even respond, Holden pushed the door open and stepped inside. He leaned casually against the doorframe, tall and sharp in a navy pinstripe suit.
He glanced over at Nova, who was still standing in front of Ramona’s desk.
Nova turned and gave him a stiff, formal nod. “Good morning, Mr. Covington.”
Her greeting was curt, and she stared at Holden with open suspicion, as if he’d shown up just to make trouble for Ramona.
Holden gave a crooked smile, running his eyes over Nova from head to toe. Of all the new hires on Ramona’s team, she was the only one who’d caught his eye. Not for any reason besides her looks, she fit his tastes exactly.
Nova was only a couple years out of college, all youthful innocence and unpolished charm. Her features were strikingly delicate, her skin almost translucent, with a thick mane of hair that fell just past her waist. She looked like she’d stepped right out of a graphic novel—sweet, naive, a little clumsy.
