The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 141

Winnie couldn’t help feeling a little bitter at those words. She worked so hard every day, tending to Liliane with the utmost care, yet the old woman was still pining for Ramona.

Still, Liliane wasn’t wrong. Ramona really was attentive in ways Winnie couldn’t match.

The other maids used to gossip about how Ramona would massage Liliane’s shoulders and soak her feet before bed, fill the room with soothing scents to help her sleep, and ensure she woke up refreshed and in good spirits.

Even little things, like making sure the coffee was ready at just the right time, Ramona had reminders set so everything fit perfectly with Liliane’s routine. Those details alone made life a little cozier, a little easier. No wonder Liliane always seemed to prefer staying at Ramona’s place.

Now that Liliane had brought up Ramona, she looked a little unsettled herself.

When Winnie returned with a fresh cup of coffee, Liliane hesitated before finally asking, “Has Ramona gotten in touch with Jotham these last few days?”

“How would I know?” Winnie replied, feigning indifference. “Wasn’t she the one who wanted a divorce? Maybe she’s just waiting for our Jotham to beg her to come back.”

Winnie deliberately brought up the subject, and Liliane’s expression darkened at once.

Liliane pressed her lips together, her voice cold. “Beg her? There’s a limit to how much you indulge a tantrum. It happens once, and then again and again, where does it end?”

She didn’t actually mind the idea of Jotham asking Ramona to come home; what bothered her was that Ramona demanded a share of the company and refused to listen to her, leaving Liliane with no leverage at all.

“You’re absolutely right,” Winnie said, her tone sharp. “If you and Jotham hadn’t spoiled her all this time, she wouldn’t dare behave like this.”

She let out a cold laugh and picked up an apple, starting to peel it.

“If someone has a bad habit, you have to nip it in the bud. This is the perfect chance to teach her a lesson. Let her suffer a bit. Maybe she’ll finally realize our family can get along just fine without her. If Jotham ignores her long enough, she’ll start to panic.”

With those words, any flicker of sympathy Liliane might have felt for Ramona was quickly extinguished. She sighed, glancing at the apple Winnie was slicing—assuming it was for her. But before she could say anything, Winnie took a big bite out of it herself.

“…Mom, would you like some apple?”

Winnie startled, suddenly remembering she was supposed to be caring for the old woman.

Liliane huffed. “If it were Ramona, she’d know I like my apples cut into little pieces and would hand them to me herself.”

Winnie’s face flushed with annoyance; she cursed inwardly, but forced a smile. “Of course, let me cut you a fresh one,” she said, immediately reaching for another apple.

That evening, Griffin and Jotham arrived home together.

Since Covington Group had invested their first round of capital, several new business partners had come knocking at Holt Group’s door. The projects weren’t as grand as the ones Ramona had once overseen, but if they managed to secure them all, the profits would more than cover their recent losses and fast-track the company’s return to the stock market.
