Chapter 48 Everyone Targeting Sloane
“Ahem.” The Rivers family patriarch cleared his throat, looking troubled. “Marshall, it’s not that we don’t want to help you–but when it comes to breaking the law, there’s really nothing we can do.”
He gave a subtle nudge. “Didn’t you say the Hawthorne family is your in–law? Why not ask them for help?”
Marshall picked up on the hint, sighing helplessly. “It’s not like I don’t want to. But the Hawthorne family isn’t somewhere I can just walk into.”
The matriarch cut in, “I heard Lucas sent someone over recently to bring Sloane back to the Hawthorne estate.” Her tone was suggestive. “You may not be able to get in—but someone else can.”
The mention of that made Marshall furious. “I told Sloane to go see Lucas before I came here. That ungrateful girl refused.”
The patriarch’s brows drew together, a flicker of displeasure passing through his eyes. “She refused? What is wrong with her? Doesn’t she know how serious this is? The Rivers family is on the brink of collapse and she’s still being stubborn?”
“Marshall, that’s where your family messed up,” the matriarch said with a scoff. “If she were in my house, it wouldn’t be up to her. I’d tie her up and send her over if I had to.”
Marshall’s eyes lit up at that. He was already running the numbers in his head, calculating whether it was doable.
The moment he saw the main branch was just dodging responsibility, he knew they weren’t going to lift a finger to help.
After he left, the matriarch crossed her arms. “We might as well use this to test the Hawthorne family’s stance. If they don’t step in, that means they never cared about the engagement in the first place. And if that’s the case, there’s no reason for us to care either.”
It’s just a side branch anyway. If it goes under, so be it.
Marshall returned from the main house empty–handed. Adrian had just gotten back from the police station too, where he’d gone to speak with Boone,
Seeing the looks on their faces, Helen’s heart sank. Still clinging to hope, she asked, “They won’t help?”
Marshall shook his head, his face somber. “They’re afraid of getting dragged into it. They’re doing everything they can to steer clear–no way they’re helping.”

Adrian frowned. “I spoke with Boone, and he finally told me the truth. He really did hit that
man.”
“What?” Helen’s voice cracked. She felt like the sky had fallen. They’d all thought he was being framed. “Then that video online…”
Adrian’s face was tense as he continued, “I only learned about the video after leaving the station. But Boone said that street had no surveillance at the time. He’d already paid someone to take the fall. That guy’s already in prison.”
“Then how is this even coming back up?” Helen collapsed onto the couch, completely lost. “Is someone targeting Boone?”
But Marshall picked up on something more important. “If Boone already found someone to take the blame, then we stick to that story. And the video didn’t even show Boone’s face.”
“Right, right!” Helen clung to that like a drowning woman grabbing a rope, her eyes lit with fresh hope. “As long as we deny everything, the police can’t do anything to Boone. Once the media loses interest, this’ll all blow over.”
