Sloane looked at Jill’s puppy–dog eyes, reached out, and gently patted her head. “It’s handled. Let’s go.”
Jill hurried to catch up. “But what about the post?”
Sloane glanced sideways at her. “You think Stonebridge University earned its top rank by doing nothing? If they can’t even sort this out, they don’t deserve to be called the best.”
Meanwhile, in one of the Computer Science department’s offices, several people were gathered around a computer.
Just minutes ago, they’d discovered that the school forum’s firewall had been breached–but before they could even react, the intruder had already exited the system.
And now, a giant apple icon sat squarely in the middle of the screen. No matter how many experts on their team took turns, none of them could remove it.
“Well? Have you cracked it yet?” Sean’s forehead was slick with sweat.
Baylon, seated at the computer, frowned deeply as his fingers flew across the keyboard. Beads of sweat dotted his forehead.
“This hacker’s technique is insane. Not only did they break through the firewall we spent weeks perfecting, they even patched up our existing security flaws without leaving a trace. And this thing they left behind–I have no idea what it is or what it does.”
John, peering at the dense wall of code on the screen, let out a low whistle. “Who the hell is this? This is straight–up provocation. If we can’t crack this, we’ll lose all credibility when it comes to cybersecurity on campus.”
Sloane, on the other hand, had long since forgotten about the entire matter. Jill had dragged her to the food street near campus to hunt down something tasty.
It wasn’t until she returned that afternoon and got a call from Mr. Samson that she and Jill parted ways.
Sloane went straight to Mr. Samson’s office. Just outside the door, she could already hear someone yelling inside. She hesitated a moment, then knocked.
“Come in.”

Sloane stepped inside to find the room tense and heavy. Mr. Samson was visibly furious. Sean and the others had their heads down in embarrassment.
“There you are,” Mr. Samson said, forcing down his anger and putting on a smile. He pointed at the books on the desk. “These are your textbooks. Take them with you.”
“Oh, okay.” Sloane walked over and picked up the stack of books. Her gaze naturally fell on the computer screen beside them–where the apple icon still proudly sat.
She raised an eyebrow. “What’s that?”
