Nyroth

I stood at the doorway of her oncebedchamber, and guilt weighed heavily on me.

Guilt, because all of this feels like my fault. Because everything that happened seems to trace back to me. Because, in truth, I am the architect of my own ruin. Of all ruin.

If only I had loved her, truly and only her, perhaps death and war wouldn’t have followed. She wouldn’t have found a reason to go to another man, especially one like Apex.

I stared at the letter in my hand, its words revealing what war can destroy, how love can conquer, and how acceptance can transform.

The letter said that Varyn Ashmere was dead, he died alone in his bed, in the isolated Ash Pack. That oncegreat pack that no one dared to speak of aloud unless they were ready to pay with their lives.

After Zeph left the pack, most of its members went rogue. Gradually, one by one, they disappeared, until even Kostyra, Zeph’s aunt who betrayed her own bloodline for power, packed her belongings and left with her husband to seek refuge in Rogue Town, to live miserably.

Dessyn Dusk had stayed loyal to Varyn Ashmere until the very end. After his death, she laid him to rest and returned home to live as his widow in White Pack with her father.

They said sadness was her first companion, loneliness her second, and regret her third.

These days, she goes around seeking jobs as a host, but few nobles or Alphas will hire her, everyone knows her part in the war.

She never spoke sense into Varyn; she only fueled his madness. She lost everything because of it all. Her brother, her man, and her best friend, who would have died for her.

Even her Alpha, Auedric, grew tired of her. Word spread that her father had fallen gravely ill after Moon’s death, and now she spends her days caring for him, bearing the full weight of her past.

My thoughts drifted to the Yadevs. I had visited once, when Dareth, Apex’s uncle, returned after being exiled from his own kingdom. But soon after his arrival, Kaela’s mother rejected

him.

He was devastated to realize they had used and deceived him. He tried to make his way back to

the Lycan Kingdom to beg forgiveness, but he never arrived. He died on the road, his body thrown into the river, unwanted, unclaimed.

After Dareth’s death, Kaela’s mother fell ill suddenly, followed soon after by her father. No healer or physician could save them; every one of them said the same thing.

It’s contagious, and it’s incurable.

Fear spread quickly, and people fled from the Yadevs. Kaela once tried to come here, but my guards refused to let her near even before I spoke a word.

Her parents died in agony, consumed by sickness. She thought she was safe, until it came for her too.

With no one left to care for her, she hired maids and paid them high wages, but when her fortune ran dry, they all abandoned her.

The Blackbridge Pack, the one she had fought so hard and cruelly to obtain, became hers alone, but she was utterly isolated.

It was said she spent her final days confined to her bed, suffering in loneliness and regret, her life slipping away slowly and painfully.

I quietly closed the door of Zeph old chamber and walked toward my mother’s, my heart sinking further.

In my own life, things weren’t much better. My mother had long given up on Olivia, who had completely lost her mind.

Now she lives bound to her bed, often crying out that Varyn is calling her back to the Ash Pack.

Amid all this sorrow, my mother too had fallen ill.

Standing at her doorway, I saw her frail body lying weakly in bed. I walked in and sat beside her. She sighed heavily, and the silence between us grew dense, until she turned to me, eyes heavy with remorse.

If only we had known, Nyroth, she said softly. If only we had known, we would never have treated Zeph so cruelly.

I swallowed hard, regret clawing through me for the thousandth time.

How is she? Have you heard anything from her?she asked.

I shook my head slowly, my heart sinking under the weight of truth.

Word had spread that the massive gate of the Lycan Kingdom was sealed, never to open again, not in Apex Blood’s reign, nor in mine.

And so it was.

Years passed, and that gate never opened. I grew old, alone, leaving behind no heir, never hearing from Zeph again, never seeing her, never holding her.

Yet the wind carried whispers across the lands, stories of her life beyond the sealed gate.

In the pages of history, Zephyrine Ashmere was remembered as the first and greatest fearless female Alpha, who loved and married the Great Hybrid, the first of his kind to walk the living world.

History remembers her as the Last Alpha of Ash Pack, the first Werwolf to serve as a Queen over all Lycans, the one who left the wolf empire for the Lycan Kingdom, never to be seen again, though her happy laughter, they said, could still be heard carried by the wind across the sealed gates of the Kingdom she ruled with her beloved while she still lived.
