The Thorne Heiress Unveiling Shadow novel Chapter 21

The Foundation Ball was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, its grand hall transformed into an enchanted forest of shimmering lights and cascading floral arrangements. This was the apex of New York society, a place where fortunes were made and reputations were shattered with a single whispered comment. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the low hum of power.

When the Thorne family's black Rolls-Royce pulled up, a ripple of electricity went through the press line. Arthur and Lillian Thorne were legends, old money personified, and their public appearances were rare. Chase was the new king of Wall Street, his every move scrutinized. But tonight, all eyes were on the young woman who stepped out of the car with them.

Evelyn.

The reporters, initially expecting a flashy debutante, were momentarily silenced. Her dress didn't scream for attention. It was the opposite. It was a confident, profound silence, a piece of the night sky that drew you in rather than shouting at you. The old-money matriarchs, the women who could spot a fake diamond from a hundred paces, instantly recognized the gown for what it was: a level of bespoke luxury that made their own couture look like off-the-rack department store fare. Whispers began immediately. Who is she? Look at that fabric… it's impossible. That's a Thorne, through and through.

They were greeted by the foundation's chairman, who treated them with the reverence usually reserved for royalty. Chase guided Evelyn through the entrance, his hand resting lightly on the small of her back. "Nervous?" he murmured, his voice low.

"No," Evelyn replied truthfully, her eyes scanning the room with a cool, analytical gaze. This wasn't a party to her. It was a database of faces, connections, and vulnerabilities. She identified the CEO of a major tech rival talking to a senator, a gossip columnist laughing a little too loudly with a prominent banker's wife, a dozen small dramas playing out like data points on a screen. "It's just… a collection of people in a large room."

Her calm observation made Chase chuckle. "That's one way to put it."

Just then, another flurry of flashes erupted from the entrance. Aria Sutton had arrived.

She had timed her entrance for maximum impact, stepping out of her cherry-red Porsche in her glittering "Starlight Gown." The dress was undeniably beautiful, a glittering explosion of silver that caught every camera flash and magnified it. She posed dramatically, her hand on her hip, a dazzling smile plastered on her face. She was here to be the star, the undisputed center of the universe. A young woman with a press pass and a microphone rushed forward.

"Aria! You look absolutely divine! This is Bethany from 'Style Watch'," the blogger gushed, clearly a pre-arranged interview. "Tell us about this incredible dress!"
