Their macroeconomics seminar was held in a wood-paneled room that smelled of old books and intellectual rigor. The professor, Dr. Albright, was a notoriously brilliant academic terror, a man who had won a Nobel prize in his youth and now enjoyed nothing more than verbally dismembering students who came to his class unprepared.
As Evelyn and Chloe found their seats, the whispers were palpable. The rumor had clearly made its way through the business school. Aria, sitting several rows ahead with her few remaining lackeys, shot a triumphant, venomous look over her shoulder, confident that Evelyn was about to be humiliated in a more academic setting.
Today's topic was the instability of emerging markets. Dr. Albright was pacing at the front of the room. "The standard models are insufficient," he was saying, his voice a low growl. "They fail to account for the unpredictable, irrational human element. Who can offer a more modern theoretical framework?"
A hand shot up. It was Todd, one of Aria's most loyal sycophants, a smarmy trust-fund kid.
"Dr. Albright," Todd began, puffing out his chest. "Isn't it true that some economists have tried to apply chaos theory to these markets? But that it's largely considered a dead end, since it's impossible to predict anything?" He then turned, a smug smirk on his face, and looked directly at Evelyn. "Perhaps Evelyn Thorne could elaborate? As someone who supposedly comes from a... chaotic background... she must have a unique perspective on the subject."
The insult was clear. He was publicly branding her with Aria's lie. Aria hid a satisfied smile behind her hand.
The class went quiet, all eyes turning to Evelyn. They expected her to flush with shame.
Evelyn, however, slowly closed her notebook. She stood up, her movements calm and deliberate.
"That's one way to look at it," she said, her voice even and clear. She looked not at Todd, but directly at Dr. Albright. "But the idea that chaos theory is about unpredictability is a common misunderstanding. It's actually about finding hidden patterns in systems that look random."
Dr. Albright's eyebrows shot up, a flicker of genuine interest in his sharp eyes.
