The Thorne Heiress Unveiling Shadow novel Chapter 56

The adrenaline of the discovery and the subsequent threat sent a surge of energy through the command center. Kaelen's face on the monitor was a mask of cold, hard resolve. His immediate, instinctive reaction was that of a commander in a warzone.

"Grey Guard is already en route," he said, his voice sharp and commanding, leaving no room for argument. "Their orders are clear: secure the asset, by any means necessary. They will go in hard and fast. They will extract Martha Gable, whether she wants to come with them or not. Her safety is the only thing that matters."

He was ready to send in a small army, to treat an elderly nurse like a high-value target in a hostile territory. It was a logical, efficient, and utterly ruthless plan.

"No," Evelyn said, her voice quiet but absolute.

The single word, spoken with such calm authority, stopped Kaelen cold. He stared at her image, his eyebrows drawing together in a thunderous expression of disbelief. No one, in his entire adult life, had ever so flatly contradicted a direct command.

"What did you just say?" he asked, his voice dangerously low.

"I said no," Evelyn repeated, turning in her chair to face him fully. She wasn't intimidated by his anger. She met his stormy gaze with her own calm, steady one. "Your plan is a mistake, Kaelen."

Chase stepped forward, placing a protective hand on his sister's shoulder. "My sister is right," he said, his voice a low growl of warning. "You are not sending a squad of military-types to strong-arm an innocent old woman."

"She is no longer an innocent old woman," Kaelen countered, his voice tight with frustration. "She is the single most important witness in a war against a global criminal organization. Her feelings are a luxury we can no longer afford."
