Mia's POV

Gas's ears perked up, and he hurried to the door, his tail wagging nonstop. Moments later, we heard the sound of a key being inserted into the lock—my mother had returned from her mysterious "date."

She stood by the door, surveying the unexpected gathering in the living room. She smiled at Scarlett and Morton, but her smile faded quickly as she sensed the tension in the room. "What's going on?"

I didn't want to worry her, but I could only describe what had happened in the simplest terms.

"Dad's dead," I said, the blunt words sounding like the kindest way to put it. "They found him hanging in his cell this morning."

My mother's expression remained calm, but she fell silent for a moment. "I see," she said in a flat tone, placing her handbag on the table by the entrance. "They said it was suicide, right?"

I nodded, watching her closely.

"How convenient," she remarked.

"You don't seem surprised," Morton observed.

My mother turned her gaze to him. "I know my ex-husband, Mr. Morton. He had an excessive attachment to his own life." She walked steadily toward the kitchen. "Would anyone like some tea? I find it helpful in situations like this."

Scarlett and I exchanged glances. "Tea would be nice," Scarlett answered for both of us.

My mother returned with the tea tray, her movements elegant despite the heavy conversation. As she poured the tea, I noticed how steady her hands were.

"Mom," I asked cautiously, "did you ever hear Dad mention Diana Porter?"

She looked up at me. "No, not specifically. But sometimes he'd suddenly end a conversation when I walked into the room. He always took those business calls alone." She handed me a cup of tea. "I thought it was related to his affair with Helen, but maybe there were other reasons."

I took a deep breath. I hadn't told anyone about the diary yet, not even my mother.

"I heard that Diana Porter had an illegitimate child," I said carefully, watching their reactions. "Did any of you know about that?"
