Mia’s POV

By six, I was running late for dinner with Scarlett.

My phone chimed with a notification as I was gathering my things:

ScarStar is now LIVE! “Haute Cuisine Adventures with Your Favorite Former Corporate Wife!”

I smiled and tapped to open the stream. Scarlett’s perfectly made–up face filled the screen, her signature red lips curved in a welcoming smile.

“Hello, darlings! We’re approaching seven thousand viewers already! Amazing! For those just joining, I’m about to experience the most talked–about new restaurant in Manhattan–Lumière. The waiting list is three months long, but your girl got reservations for tonight!!

The comments section was flooding with messages from her fans:

Scarlett angled the camera to show her outfit–a stunning emerald dress that hugged her curves perfectly.

Scarlett leaned forward, her expression shifting from surprise to concern. “Mia, honey. Please tell me you’re not going down that rabbit hole again.”

“The one where you torture yourself over Kyle Branson.”

I started to protest, but she held up a manicured hand.

“I watched you nearly destroy yourself those first two years, searching for him, trying to understand why he left. I’m not going to sit by and watch you do it again because some guy has a similar bone structure. ”

“It doesn’t matter,” she said firmly. “Even if this man was Kyle’s long–lost twin–which he’s not–what good does it do you to obsess over it? You’ve built an amazing life without Kyle. The boys are thriving. Your career is soaring. You have Thomas, who adores you.”

She reached across the table and took my hand. “Get those men out of your head, Mia. All of them. Kyle, this new client–they don’t deserve your mental energy.”

“That’s rich coming from you,” I said without thinking. “I saw your I*******m post from Milan last week. The one where you just happened to be at the same restaurant as Morton.”

Scarlett’s cheeks flushed. “That was different. I was making a point.”

I appreciated her attempt, but we both knew the truth. The twins were the perfect mix of me and Kyle, whether I wanted to acknowledge it or not.

Our food arrived–artfully plated creations that Scarlett immediately photographed from multiple angles for later posting. The conversation shifted to safer topics: her upcoming trip to Tokyo, my Paris project, the latest gallery opening Thomas was curating.

It wasn’t until dessert that she returned to the subject of Maxwell.

“So this lookalike client,” she began carefully. “Are you taking the project?”

“Yes. It’s a major commission–transforming his family estate into a wellness retreat. The kind of project I’d never turn down, regardless of who the client is.”
