Mia’s POV

An email from Jackson Maxwell had arrived that morning.

Looking forward to our meeting on Monday to review the Initial concepts. My assistant will send the updated requirements shortly.

My stomach fluttered at the sight of his name. Despite Scarlett’s warnings, I couldn’t stop thinking about him- not romantically though.

“Mom! Watch me!” Alexander called, pulling me from my thoughts. He was attempting to do a somersault on the grass, which ended with him rolling sideways instead of forward.

“Amazing!” I cheered, tucking my phone away. “Ten out of ten!”

Not to be outdone, Ethan immediately launched into his own acrobatic display, which was marginally more successful but ended with grass stains on his knees,

“I’m hungry,” Alexander announced after exhausting his repertoire of tumbling moves.

I checked my watch. “It’s only 10:30, sweetie. We just had breakfast.”

“But exploring makes me extra hungry,” he reasoned. “My stomach thinks it’s lunch time.”

“Mine too,” Ethan chimed in. “It’s talking to me. Listen.” He held his stomach out dramatically.

I laughed. “Fine. Small snack now, lunch in an hour.” I reached into our bag and pulled out apple slices and cheese sticks.

As the boys munched, I found myself scanning the park, a habit I’d developed over the years. Always watching, always alert. The trauma from my past had left me with a constant vigilance that I couldn’t quite shake, even on beautiful days in safe places.

“Mom, can we go to the playground now?” Ethan asked, having inhaled his snack in record time.

“Yes, please!” Alexander added, already on his feet.

“Sure,” I agreed, gathering our things. Gas needs some water first, then we’ll head over.”

The playground was busier than the meadow, filled with children of various ages climbing, sliding, and swinging. I found a bench with a good view of the entire play area and settled in, keeping Gas close by my side.

The twins made a beeline for the climbing structure, racing each other to the top of the slide. I watched them negotiate turns with two other children, proud of how they took turns without my intervention.

A woman sat down beside me, a sleeping toddler cradled against her chest.

“Twins?” she asked, nodding toward Alexander and Ethan, who were now hanging upside down from the monkey bars.

“Yes,” I smiled. “Four years old and exhausting”

She laughed. “I remember those days. Mine are nine and twelve now, plus this little surprise.” She glanced down at the sleeping toddler. “Just when I thought I was done with diapers.”

“They’re adorable,” I said honestly. “All three of them.”

“Thanks. Your boys are cute too. They look just like you.”

I didn’t correct her. It was easier than explaining that they had their father’s eyes, his stubborn chin, his strategic mind.

“Mom! Look how high I am!” Alexander shouted from the top of the climbing net.

My heart jumped into my throat. He was at least ten feet up, higher than I’d ever seen him climb before.

“Be careful!” I called, standing up. Gas perked up beside me, sensing my alarm.

“I can go higher!” he declared, reaching for the next rung.

“Alexander James Williams, don’t you dare,” I said firmly, moving closer to the structure. “That’s high enough.”

Ethan, never one to be left behind, had made his way up to join his brother. “We’re king of the mountain!” he announced proudly.

“Kings,” I corrected automatically, my anxiety rising as they swayed on the ropes. “Both of you, please start climbing down now.”

“But we just got up here,” Alexander whined.

“Down. Now.” My mom voice was in full effect.

With dramatic sighs that suggested I was ruining their lives forever, they began the descent. I held my breath, watching every movement, ready to spring forward if needed.
