The sheets were still warm, and I could feel the lingering heat from Thomas’s body beside me. My skin felt sensitive in all the right ways, and there was this perfect drowsiness that came after really good sex. Thomas’s hand was doing that thing he always did afterward–unconsciously twirling strands of my hair around his fingers, like he was making tiny golden spirals.
I stretched languidly, enjoying the pull in my muscles, and turned my head to look at him. His eyes were closed, but I could tell from his breathing that he wasn’t asleep. There was this little smile playing at the corners of his mouth that made me want to kiss him again.
“Mmm,” I hummed contentedly, snuggling closer to his chest.
“You’re perfect.“, his voice still husky. His arm tightened around me, pulling me flush against his side.
I laughed softly. “I’m sweaty and my hair’s a mess.”
“Perfectly messy,” he corrected, giving one of my curls a gentle tug. “The best kind of
messy.
We lay there in comfortable silence for a while, just breathing together. Thomas said suddenly, his fingers stilling in my hair. “Are you going to Jeo’s wedding next weekend?”

I lifted my head to look at him properly. “Oh God, the wedding. I completely forgot to confirm with you.” propped myself up on my elbow, suddenly feeling more alert. “You’re free that Saturday, right? Please tell me you’re free. I already RSVP’d for both of us.”
Thomas chuckled, reaching up to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. “Yes, I’m free. Wouldn’t miss it. Though I have to admit, I’m still amazed those two made it work.”
“Right?” I grinned, thinking about our friends. “When Jeo first started talking about this brilliant pediatric surgeon he’d met, I was thinking an artist and a pediatric surgeo?”
“Leila is something else entirely,” Thomas agreed.
“And now she’s pregnant!” I added excitedly. “Can you believe it? Jeo’s going to be a dad. But it’s true he’s perfect with Leila. And they want Nate to be the godfather, which is so sweet.”
Thomas’s hand resumed its gentle movements in my hair. “It’s nice, isn’t it?”
There was something in his tone that made me look at him more carefully. His expression was soft, content.
“It is nice,” I agreed quietly, settling back down against his chest. “Really nice.”
We fell quiet again, and I found myself thinking about Jeo and Leila’s relationship. They’d been together for four years now, solid and steady and so clearly meant for each other. There was an ease between them that I envied sometimes the way Leila could tease Jeo about his terrible cooking and he’d just laugh and kiss her forehead. The way they seemed to communicate without words, finishing each other’s sentences and sharing private jokes.
“Mia?” Thomas’s voice interrupted my spiraling thoughts. “You got quiet. What’s going on in that brilliant

brain of yours?”
“Actually,” I said slowly, “there’s something I should probably mention. About my new client.”
Thomas’s hand stilled in my hair. “Maxwell? The estate renovation?”

“Yeah.” I took a deep breath, suddenly feeling nervous. “He…. this is going to sound crazy, but he looks like Kyle.
The silence that followed felt heavy. Thomas didn’t move, but I could feel a subtle tension creep into his body.
“Looks like Kyle how?” he asked carefully, his voice neutral.
“A lot like Kyle,” I admitted. “The first time I saw him, I actually thought… for a split second, I thought it was him. Same height, same build, similar facial structure. It was jarring.”
Thomas was quiet for a long moment, and I found myself holding my breath, waiting for his reaction.
“But it’s not him,” he said finally. It wasn’t a question.
“No, definitely not. When I got a closer look, there are differences. His hair is lighter, his eyes are hazel instead of gray, he has a scar on his jaw. And his personality is completely different. Warmer, more… I don’t know, accessible? If that makes sense.”
“And you’re telling me this because…?”
I lifted my head to look at him again. His expression was carefully neutral, but I could see the question in his eyes. The slight uncertainty.
“Because it shook me up,” I said honestly. “And because we don’t usually talk about… about Kyle anymore. Haven’t for a long time. I wasn’t sure if I should mention it or if it would be weird.”
Thomas was quiet for another moment, then suddenly he smiled–not his usual warm smile, but something more teasing, almost mischievous.
“Are you afraid I’ll get jealous?” he asked, raising an eyebrow. “Mia Williams, if you’re that worried about it, maybe you should marry me quickly. Otherwise I’ll have to worry that every man who looks like Kyle Branson is going to come along and steal my girlfriend.”
I stared at him for a beat, then burst out laughing. “Thomas!”
“What? I’m serious,” he said, but he was grinning now. “I mean, if there are Kyle Branson doppelgangers just wandering around, catching falling children and commissioning healing centers, I clearly need to step up my game.”
“You’re ridiculous,” I said, but I was smiling too.
“I do know that,” he said smugly, pulling me down for a kiss. “I also know that you’re overthinking this. It’s a job, Mia. A really good job for your career. It’s just the client happens to look like your ex–husband.”
“You’re right,” I said, kissing him back. “It’s just work.”
