I stared at the delivery receipt in my hands, trying to process what had just happened. The delivery men had wheeled out two enormous packages–one large enough to contain a bicycle, the other an elaborate gift basket that looked like it belonged in a luxury hotel lobby.
“Who are they from?” I asked Camille, who was examining the elegant cards attached to each package.
“Jackson Maxwell,” she replied, holding up a cream–colored card with embossed lettering. “There’s a note here.

I took the card from her, reading the neat handwriting:
Dear Mia, I hope you don’t mind the presumption, but I couldn’t stop thinking about your delightful sons after our chance encounter at the park. They seemed like such bright, energetic boys, and I thought they might enjoy these small tokens of my appreciation for their good behavior that day. Please give them my regards. Best wishes, Jackson Maxwell
“What exactly did Maxwell send?” I asked, moving toward the packages.
We opened the larger package first. Inside was a professional–grade telescope, the kind that cost thousands of dollars. It was clearly designed for children but built with adult–quality components. The accompanying instruction manual was thick enough to be a textbook.
“Jesus,” I whispered. “This is way too much.”
The gift basket was equally extravagant–filled with art supplies, science experiment kits, books, and what appeared to be a collection of rare dinosaur fossils. Each item was carefully chosen, clearly selected by someone who’d paid attention to the twins‘ interests.
“He must have really been watching us at the park,” I murmured, examining a book about space exploration that Alexander would absolutely love.
“Camille,” I said, making a decision about the overwhelming generosity. “I’m going to take just the art supplies and the space book for now. The telescope is too much. And the fossils… I don’t want to spoil them with too many gifts at once.‘
Maxwell’s generosity is too much.
Camille helped me organize which items to take and which to store. My mind flashed back to that day at Prospect Park. Maxwell catching Alexander when he fell from the climbing structure. The twins chattering excitedly about their “superhero rescuer.” How had I not realized he was watching us so carefully that he’d remember specific details about the boys?
In an instant, Victoria’s voice echoed in my mind.
“Does Kyle Branson know you’re messing around with your new boyfriend?”
Present tense. Does Kyle know. Not did Kyle know before he disappeared. Not would Kyle care if he ever came back.

Does.
Like Kyle was still around. Still reachable. Still part of the present instead of the past.
I sank into my desk chair, the space book still in my hands. Why would Victoria phrase it that way? Everyone knew Kyle had been gone for four years. The official story was an extended sabbatical, but anyone who’d done basic research would know he hadn’t been seen publicly in years.
Unless…
Unless Victoria knew something I didn’t.
“Mia?” Camille’s voice seemed to come from very far away. “Are you okay? You look pale.”
I forced myself to focus on her concerned face. “Sorry. Just thinking.”
