Chapter 258 Sounding like a paranoid bitch
Mia’s POV
Thomas was already waiting for me at the café.
The little comer spot on Fifth Street that we’d claimed as “ours” over the past few months.
I stood at the entrance of the café, not moving forward, quietly watching him from behind the glass door. He was sitting at our usual table by the window, his dark hair slightly messed up like he’d been running his hands through it. His shoulders were tense, hunched forward as he stared down at his phone.
My feelings toward Thomas were complicated.
I knew Thomas didn’t want me or the children to be unhappy. He understood how to care for his partner’s emotions better than most men I’d known. Better than Kyle ever had, that was for damn sure. Thomas noticed when I was quiet. He brought me coffee the way I liked it. He remembered that Alexander preferred his sandwiches cut diagonally and that Ethan got cranky if his bedtime routine was disrupted.
But I didn’t want to force Thomas to make a decision.
God, I really didn’t. –
If I told Thomas that Victoria was abusing her children, would he believe me?
I didn’t want to speak first. I didn’t want to force another conversation about boundaries and loyalty and all the messy, complicated shit that seemed to follow us around lately.
In the end, I shrugged my shoulders and pushed through the door.
I walked over to the table, my heels clicking against the hardwood floor. The café was mostly empty – just a few laptop warriors in the corner and an older couple sharing a newspaper. Our usual barista, Jake, waved at me from behind the counter.
“The usual?” he called out.
“Yeah, thanks,” I replied, sliding into the seat across from Thomas.
“Hey,” I said.
Thomas looked up from his phone, and I saw those handsome eyebrows tightly furrowed.
This made me feel sad.
I reached across the table and held Thomas’s hand.
I understood that he didn’t want me or the children to get involved in any trouble. Thomas was a protector by
nature.
We were just helplessly caught up in this complicated situation.
Neither of us had asked for this.

“Mia,” Thomas said quietly, his thumb stroking across my knuckles. “I’m sorry.”
“For what?” I asked, though I already knew.
“For not handling the situation better. For…” He trailed off, shaking his head. “Victoria told me her side of what happened.”
Of course she did.
As I had expected, Victoria must have found a suitable excuse in front of Thomas.
“And what did she say?” I asked, keeping my voice carefully neutral.
“She said she was just overly worried about Madison. That she’d been stressed about Madison starting at a new school, and when Madison came home upset about the incident with Alexander and Ethan, she just… reacted poorly.”
“Reacted poorly,” I repeated flatly.
“She knows she shouldn’t have given Madison information about your family situation. She admitted that was wrong.” Thomas’s eyes met mine, earnest and apologetic. “She said she was just trying to help Madison understand why the boys might be acting out.”
My boys weren’t acting out, but I bit my tongue.
“Mia, forgive her” Thomas continued, his voice dropping lower, “she has a history of bipolar disorder. She said sometimes when she’s stressed, she doesn’t make the best decisions. Her judgment gets clouded.”
I rolled my eyes inwardly.
Bipolar disorder. How fucking convenient.
Don’t get me wrong – mental health struggles are real and serious, and I wouldn’t wish them on anyone. But Victoria only pulled out her mental health card the moment she needed an excuse for her shitty behavior.
I really regretted not recording Victoria’s true self when she spoke to me alone. Now I had no proof.
I hesitated, knowing I couldn’t directly say that Victoria was not only a widow with an obsessive possessiveness toward Thomas but had even abused her children.
How do you tell someone that their dead best friend’s wife is a monster? How do you make them see what they don’t want to see?
Jake appeared at our table with my usual – a large vanilla latte with extra foam, “Here you go, Mia. Everything okay? You two look pretty serious over here.”
“Just working through some stuff,” I said with a forced smile. “Thanks, Jake.”
He nodded and retreated, leaving us alone again with our complicated conversation.
I wrapped my hands around the warm mug and took a sip, buying myself time to think. The coffee was perfect, just the way I liked it, but it tasted like ash in my mouth.

“Thomas,” I said finally, “can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
“Madison is really thin. I mean, really thin. Why is that?”

Thomas blinked, clearly not expecting that question. “She has severe allergies,” he said immediately. “To a lot of different foods. Victoria has to monitor her diet very carefully.”
