Chapter 261 Engagement Announcement
Mia’s POV
The elevator doors slid open with their familiar chime. I made my way toward the reception desk.
This was my third time visiting Jackson Maxwell’s office.
Good news. I’d finally managed to push aside those crazy thoughts that had been driving me to desperately confirm whether Jackson was Kyle.
I began to slowly distinguish the differences between him and Kyle. Jackson’s skin tone was definitely lighter than Kyle’s had been. Kyle spent time outdoors, always had that subtle tan from his golf games and weekend sailing. Jackson had the pale complexion of someone who lived in boardrooms and luxury cars.
His iris color was different too. Kyle’s eyes had been that intense gray that could turn stormy when he was angry or calculating when he was planning something. Jackson’s were hazel.
And he seemed taller. Kyle had been maybe six feet, six–one at most. Jackson had to be at least six–three, possibly six–four. How had I not noticed that before?
I shook my head as I approached his assistant’s desk, stopping those thoughts before they could spiral again.
Recalling old memories that no longer matter is useless.
“Ms. Williams,” Margaret greeted me with her practiced smile. “Mr. Maxwell is expecting you. Please go right in.”
I was glad my rationality seemed to have finally returned in the presence of this man full of secrets. Whatever mysteries surrounded Jackson Maxwell, they weren’t my business unless they related to the wellness retreat project.
I knocked twice on his office door and heard that familiar deep voice call out, “Come in.”
Jackson looked up from his desk as I entered, rising smoothly from his chair.
“Mia,” he said, moving around his desk toward me.
“Jackson,” I replied, forcing my voice to remain steady as I approached.
I got straight to the point, reaching into my portfolio bag. “Before we discuss the project updates, I wanted to thank you for the gifts you sent to my children. Alexander and Ethan haven’t stopped talking about their new art supplies.”
A slight smile played at the corners of his mouth. “I’m glad they enjoyed them.”
I continued, pulling out the carefully wrapped package my assistant had prepared. “While I appreciate the gesture, there was really no need to give my children such luxurious items. That telescope alone probably cost more than-“I
“Mia.” Jackson’s voice was gentle but firm as he moved closer. “They’re children. Children should have nice things that inspire them to learn and grow.”

Maxwell didn’t show much emotion beyond that slight smile. He simply said he was glad the children enjoyed the gifts. “Just consider it a gesture from a friend. It has nothing to do with our work.”
It was clear that to someone as wealthy as him, what I was talking about seemed like something very cheap. The kind of money he’d spent on the twins‘ gifts was probably what he spent on lunch.
I took out the gift my assistant had prepared for me–a vintage leather journal from a small bookstore in Greenwich Village. Nothing fancy, nothing expensive compared to what he’d given the boys. But genuine.
I thought someone like Maxwell might not even notice it.
But I didn’t care.
I just needed him to feel that there shouldn’t be any more unnecessary gifts between us. Professional boundaries were important, especially when clients started sending expensive presents to my children.
“This is for you,” I said, extending the wrapped journal. “Just a small token of appreciation for your business.‘
Jackson accepted the package with careful hands, unwrapping it slowly. His fingers traced the aged leather cover, and something shifted in his expression–a warmth that hadn’t been there before.
“This is beautiful, Mia,” he said quietly. “Thoughtful. Thank you.
I cleared my throat and pulled out my project files. “Shall we discuss the construction timeline? I have some exciting updates on the progress.”
Jackson seemed to shake himself back to business mode, moving to the conference table where I was already spreading out the latest blueprints and progress reports.
