Mia’s POV

Thomas said nothing during my breakdown.

After what felt like hours but was probably only minutes, when I finally looked up at him, he simply said, “I’m sorry, Mia.”

I could only look at him, confusion.

He touched my hair gently, his fingers trailing through the strands that had come loose from my carefully arranged chignon. “I don’t know how Taylor got out of prison, but we can’t fight the Field family now.‘

I forced myself to speak through the tightness in my throat. “It’s not your fault, Thomas.”

The way the world worked had never been logical.

Money and power could rewrite history, erase inconvenient truths, transform criminals into philanthropists. I should have known better than to think Taylor would stay buried in the past.

“Let’s go back,” I said, straightening my shoulders with effort. “Kids must be worried about why we’ve been gone so long.”

Thomas nodded and pulled me into another hug, this one longer and more protective than the last.

As we held each other, I made a silent promise to myself.

Life has already given me more than enough of both the bitter and the sweet.

It’s just another round.

I don’t want too many negative voices cluttering my mind, and I don’t need my children to be upset because of

He’s dead or not. He’s gone or not. And whether he marries anyone else in the world is none of my business.

The celebration inside had evolved into a more casual mingling session. Taylor and Kyle were still the center of attention, surrounded by well–wishers and social climbers eager to associate themselves with the newly announced power couple.

I spotted Nate immediately. He was standing near a large window with Alexander and Ethan, pointing out boats in the harbor and keeping them entertained with what appeared to be an impromptu lesson about marine navigation.

The moment my boys saw me, they ran over with obvious relief.

“Mama!” Alexander reached me first, wrapping his small arms around my waist. “Are you feeling better now?”

“Much better,” I said, kneeling down to hug them both properly. “I just needed some fresh air.”

“But Mama,” Ethan continued with the earnest wisdom that never failed to surprise me, “being sad about old things is like carrying a heavy backpack when you don’t need to. It just makes walking harder.”

Alexander nodded vigorously. “And you’re a really good walker, Mama. You carried us everywhere when we were babies, and you never got tired.”

“Well, maybe a little tired,” I said with a small smile.

“But you didn’t give up,” Alexander insisted. “You never give up. That’s why you’re the best mama in the world.

Ethan leaned closer, lowering his voice as if sharing a great secret. “Mama, do you know what I think about when I’m scared?”

“What’s that, sweetheart?”

“I think about how you always make everything okay. Like when there was that big storm last month, and the lights went out, and Alexander was crying because he thought monsters would come.”

“I wasn’t crying!” Alexander protested.

“It’s okay to be scared sometimes,” Ethan said sagely. “But then I remembered how you made it fun. You got all the flashlights and made shadow puppets on the wall, and we had a picnic on the living room floor.”

“The storm stopped being scary,” Alexander added. “Because you were there,”

I felt tears welling up again.

“You two are very wise for such little boys,” I managed to say.

“We learned from you,” Ethan said simply.

Alexander wrapped his arms around my neck.

“Well, Mama,” Alexander said, standing up straighter with determination, “you’re the bravest person we know.
